Trying to think of a more satisfying sound than the noise of a ball coming out of the heart of the strings for a sweetly struck ace?

That last service game was very satisfying on the ears as Gael Monfils sprinted to a love hold.

  2. Brits in doubles actionpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

British duo Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski have comfortably made it through to the third round of the men's doubles with a three-set victory over Nabeel Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer on court eight.

Ken isn't going far though as he's due to take on Nicholas Monroe and Oksana Kalashnikova in the first round of the mixed doubles alongside fellow Brit Anna Smith.

Fifth seeds Jamie Murray and Brazilian partner Bruno Soares have taken the first set against Paolo Lorenzi and Albert Ramos-Vinolas on court 12 in the men's doubles first round.

    Querrey 7-5 4-6 3-2 Monfils*

Serious speed off the racquet of Sam Querrey as he sizzles down a couple of string-snappers and adds a 16th ace of the match to hold.

  4. Bertens breaks againpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    V. Williams 0-3 Bertens*

Woaaah! What a shot from Kiki Bertens.

Venus Williams looks to have all of the court to aim at as she stands over an easy backhand at the net. She hammers the ball at the feet of Kiki Bertens and the Belgian somehow manages to react and flick the ball down the line and beyond Williams.

The result is that Bertens breaks serve again and Venus has lost her opening two service games.

    *Querrey 7-5 4-6 2-2 Monfils

The first sign of frustration from Sam Querrey, tugging a backhand long at 15-30 on Gael Monfils' second serve... and the American lets out an infuriated groan.

Monfils quickly turns it around to hold.

  6. Querrey holds despite Monfils magicpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Querrey 7-5 4-6 2-1 Monfils*

Gael Monfils is charging around Centre Court like he's late for France's quarter-final date with Uruguay...

He almost fills a highlights reel with more mind-boggling strokes in one point than most players manager in a tournament, but Sam Querrey watches the Frenchman's starfish-style overhead forehand drop long and takes an important hold.

    *Querrey 7-5 4-6 1-1 Monfils

A little game of cat and mouse as Querrey opts for the net and Monfils tries to guess which direction he's heading, but the American gives him the eyes and slaps a winner the other way.

He blitzes down another bumper serve to save the second break point, only for last year's semi-finalist to overhit a deep forehand and bring it back to deuce.

    *V. Williams 0-2 Bertens

Venus Williams made a slow start in losing the first set of her second round match and has been equally slack here. The stands on Court One are only half full with spectators stretching their legs following Alexander Zverev's win and they've missed Kiki Bertens take the opening two games.

    *Querrey 7-5 4-6 1-1 Monfils

Did that slip rattle Sam Querrey? Gael Monfils is starting to read his serve and Querrey's returns have become a little wayward in response.

    Two break points.

    *Querrey 7-5 4-6 1-1 Monfils

Some punchy groundstrokes coming off the American's racquet, but when Sam Querrey looks for a more subtle approach he sees the ball soaring back past him in the shape of a Gael Monfils smash.

It's a wonderful, wonderful low backhand winner on the run from the world number 13 though to bring up deuce, picking Monfils off at the net. That was superb.

Querrey's down on the next point, tumbling to the Centre Court turf with a thud. He's quickly back up, but Monfils holds.

Gael Monfils rattles down an ace, it's called out... no? Correction, it's in. Hang on, Sam Querrey's challenging...

    Querrey 7-5 4-5 Monfils*

High, wide, not at all handsome from Gael Monfils as he drags a wayward forehand into the lower rungs of Centre Court.

The Frenchman frames a Sam Querrey dipping short ball on his way into the net, but then lashes down a smash from the same spot.

    Set point.

    Fritz 4-6 7-5 7-6 (7-0) 1-6 2-6 Zverev

    John Lloyd
    Former GB Davis Cup captain

Zverev has played so well since he came on the court. Love his reaction to winning, great for the game, very charismatic. I didn't expect to see this happen, thought there would be a resumption of yesterday's match. Taylor Fritrz, the lesson he will learn is best of five sets, you have to keep that standard for four-five hours.

    Fritz 4-6 7-5 7-6 (7-0) 1-6 2-6 Zverev

Alexander Zverez on his comeback win over Taylor Fritz: "Stopping yesterday two sets to one down was not a nice feeling, I came out today and knew I would have chances. I am happy to be able to play in the third round tomorrow.

"I think the last two sets here showed my progress, I played well on clay, got to the finals in Rome, so made my first quarter-finals in Paris so it is coming together slowly and I’m preparing the best I can

"The match today showed I can’t take anything for granted. I hope I can win a few more matches here and the German crowd can watch some tennis."

    Querrey 7-5 4-5 Monfils*

Some serious whip on the Sam Querrey forehand as it launches off the turf and zips beyond an outstretched Gael Monfils.

A big hold for the American, Monfils barely got a shot in. He'll serve for the second set.

Can Monfils back up the break?

He prods a backhand into the gutter, but responds with an ace down the T.

And that's one the best points of the match so far! An extended exchange that sees Monfils disguise a passing backhand winner, before his 10th ace of the match sees him hold.
