    Zverev 6-7 (2-7) 0-0 Gulbis*

    Peter Fleming
    Seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion

Gulbis has been by far the most aggressive player. He probably doesn't have too much confidence in his forehand so thinks it is in his best interests to go for winners.

It is paying off but there is still a long way to go.

    *Zverev 6-7 (2-7) Gulbis

What a lob from Ernests Gulbis! Alexander Zverev can't find his target as he sprints back towards his own baseline - the world number 138 takes the opening set.

    Kerber 6-2 4-2 Osaka*

Another terrific serve out wide from Angelique Kerber puts her in front.

Whoops. That's a shank from Naomi Osaka, and a hold for Kerber.

  5. Tie-breakpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    *Zverev 6-6 (2-5) Gulbis

Ernests Gulbis takes another mini-break on the Alexander Zverev serve, and then flings in a wonderful slice to get the giant German pounding up court only to come up short.

    He's two points away.

    *Kerber 6-2 3-2 Osaka

A good body serve from Angelique Kerber takes us to 15-30, before the German steadies herself and clatters a forehand winner into the corner of the court to draw level.

Osaka fires a backhand out wide and a sprawling Kerber nets for deuce.

  7. Tie-breakpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    *Zverev 6-6 (1-2) Gulbis

Oh dear, Zverev flops a forehand long after a poorly placed Gulbis drop shot. The Latvian rifles down a stinging serve, only to then wrap a backhand into the net.

  8. Osaka holdspublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    *Kerber 6-2 3-2 Osaka

Every time Naomi Osaka edges in front, Angelique Kerber finds a brilliant return of serve, or a whippy forehand, to drag herself back into contention.#

We're at deuce, before Osaka clatters a huge first serve down and Kerber misses a forehand down the line for what feels like the first time.

  9. Heading to a tie-breakpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Zverev 6-6 Gulbis*

You'd have to say Alexander Zverev, the fourth seed, looks a lot more confident. Ernests Gulbis has barely won a point on the 21-year-old's serve.

But Gulbis keeps edging through his own service games, and the Latvian takes it to a tie-break.

I'm not sure Kerber could be playing a better match out here today. Everything she has touched has turned to gold.

    Zverev 5-4 Gulbis*

Wowza. 135mph off the heart of Alexander Zverev's racquet as he roughs up Ernests Gulbis like a Test bowler. No sign of anyone making a breakthrough in this one yet...

    Zverev cards another love hold.

  16. Kerber breaks to begin second setpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    *Kerber 6-2 1-0 Osaka

And much it like it was in the opening set, Angelique Kerber gets herself an early break.

She racks up three break points, with Naomi Osaka left frustrated as she misses two easy strikes, and another fluffed backhand hands Kerber the break.

    Zverev 4-3 Gulbis*

Three double faults in the opening three service games for Ernests Gulbis, but he gets away with it to tick off another hold.

Alexander Zverev, with at least two chains, possibly three around his neck, comes through unscathed to hold himself and then go for a well-earned sit down, icy towel and isotonic drink.

Think the news England have just gone 2-0 has filtered through to the Court One crowd, a few "get ins..."

  18. Game and first set - Kerberpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Kerber 6-2 Osaka

    Lovely stuff from Angelique Kerber.

Some big, angled forehands put the German in front, and she holds as another unforced error comes flying off Naomi Osaka's racquet.

  19. Osaka holds; Kerber to serve for setpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    *Kerber 5-2 Osaka

    Better from Naomi Osaka.

She holds to love, closing out her service game with a swinging ace, to force Angelique Kerber to serve out this opening set.

It's very quiet inside Centre Court...

  20. Kerber a game awaypublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Kerber 5-1 Osaka*

An irked Naomi Osaka gets to 0-30 on the Kerber serve, but a couple of overworked returns allows Kerber to get her nose in front.

Osaka drags Kerber out wide, setting herself up nicely for the winner down the line - and she misses. Kerber is a game away from taking the first set.
