    *Zverev 4-6 2-6 0-2 Thiem

Thiem opens up the body and launches a forehand assault before slamming deep on to the Zverev side from the net, but the ball whizzes back past him with interest.

The French crowd loved that from the 21-year-old German.

No such mistake off the next one. Thiem holds.

    Zverev 4-6 2-6 0-1 Thiem*

A shake of the head from the German, his youthful locks tucked behind a bright orange sweatband. It comes after another stroke drifts narrowly off target when he looked like taking the point.

It's pretty tough to watch when you see Zverev looking so flat. He needs to try to fire himself up and go for it.

    Zverev 4-6 2-6 0-1 Thiem*

    Well, well, well.

Zverev looked to have Thiem beaten on about three occasions in that mammoth rally, but the Austrian just kept flicking a wrist and getting it back.

Eventually Zverev is done with that cat and mouse game, sauntering into the net to fire down a volleyed winner.

    15-15.

High, wide, not at all handsome from Zverev as he misjudges a forehand and jabs it off his frame towards our own Jonathan Jurejko in the press box...

He finds himself two break points down.

A few stretches to keep nice and loose for the Austrian as he awaits Zverev's return.

Zverev is there on the court but it's like his mind is elsewhere.

He knows the longer this goes on the more likely it is there will be some significant damage.

He's going to have to go for it now and throw caution to the wind.

  18. Will Keys become USA's number one?published at 14:25 British Summer Time 5 June 2018

    Yulia Putintseva 6-7 (5-7) 3-4* Madison Keys

There is a great incentive for Madison Keys to progress further than fellow American Sloane Stephens, as one of them will leave the event as the top-ranked female American player.

Keys and Stephens could meet in the semi-finals, with Keys doing her part so far, leading 7-6 (7-5) 4-3 against Yulia Putintseva with a break of serve in the second set.

Before the tournament started, Venus Williams was the highest American in the rankings at ninth, with Stephens 10th and Keys 13th.

More encouragement from the crowd as a dejected-looking Zverev waits for some balls to serve with. The tall German leans with his racquet on an advertising board, twirling it on the top, while stood cross legged.

    Looking a long way back...
