At just 21 years old, Alexander Zverev has climbed to third in the world rankings and is the second seed at this year's French Open.

That is despite this being his first outing in a Grand Slam quarter-final, making him the youngest player to reach this stage of the men's draw since a 20-year-old Juan Martin del Potro in 2009.

The 6ft 6in German has been taken to five sets in his last three rounds in Paris, going 2-1 down in each of those.

It's certainly been a scenic route to the last eight.

Dominic Thiem is looking forward to this one. The Austrian reckons it's the match everyone at home has been waiting for.

"It's the match, especially in Germany and Austria, everybody was hoping for," said Thiem. "So I think we can make it legendary and that would be very nice.

"It's going to be a very tough match against him. He's going to be pumped. It's his first quarter-finals. He wants to move on, for sure. So I hope I'm a little bit more experienced in this one.

"I think for me it's time to move on to make a great step, because I'm turning 25. I'm not that young anymore. That's his part. He's only 21."

  3. Zverev loves going the distancepublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 5 June 2018

    Zverev v Thiem

Never let it be said that Alexander Zverev hasn't earned his first Grand Slam quarter-final spot.

He came from two sets to one down against Dusan Lajovic, then Damir Dzumhur and then Karen Khachanov to reach the French Open last eight.

And he's loving the extra air time...

"I'm young, so I might as well stay on court and practise a little bit," said Zverev. "It's the best, a five-set match.

"I've been down 2-1 every single time but I'm unbelievably happy to be into the quarter-finals. All the hours in the gym have paid off."

Not a pleasant view looking from Chatrier across Roland Garros towards Lenglen today. Grey and grim.

Rain bucketed down this morning in Paris, but thankfully is **for now** holding off.

The covers have been off on Chatrier for a while, the fans are streaming in. We should start on time, although I wouldn't stick a euro on the match going through without interruption.

Oh what a tasty quarter-final we're being served up at Roland Garros today.

The man touted as the future world number one takes on the only player to have beaten Rafael Nadal on clay this year.

It's Germany's Alexander Zverev against Austria's Dominic Thiem.

Odds on this one being a five-setter...
