    *Murray 1-1 Verdasco

Oh Fernando! Those 13 defeats by Murray - are they already playing on his mind?

That was a simple overhead at the net that he should have placed over rather than into it.

    15-30.

    40-30.

Verdasco tuns the game around, comes to the net and plants a slap bass of a forehand away from a stranded Murray.

    Murray 1-0 Verdasco*

Murray is on the brink of sealing the first game, he does so after the computer says "yes" on a serve down the tee which Verdasco initially thought was out.

    Murray 0-0 Verdasco*

Murray forces the error on the first point.

    15-0.

The Scot then finds the net with his forehand.

    15s each.

30-15 but then the Brit goes long with an angled forehand.

    Anyone fancy a dip?

The fountains underneath the iconic Unisphere outside the main gate to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is a good place for any ticketholders to cool down before they go in to watch the tennis.

Plenty of local kids and their parents are enjoying a dip too.

Here's the Spaniard on the 31-year-old Briton.

He has lost 13 of their 14 meetings, although they have not faced each other since the Scot returned from a 14-month absence.

Verdasco said: "I need to treat it like any other meeting, it won't change just because he has been injured.

"The level he had had before his surgery was amazing and obviously it's been a very hard recovery but when he was injured I always wished him the best. Hopefully Wednesday is going to be a good day for me."

Here's the Scot on his 34-year-old opponent: "He will certainly test my movement, that's for sure.

"He has got a huge forehand and can do whatever he wants with that shot. He can hit angles, he can flatten out, higher balls.

"He is never an easy guy to play against if he's on his game.

"It's my job in that match to stop him dictating and hopefully I can be a bit more offensive and keep him on the back foot.

"Before the tournament I said I wasn't expecting to go far and I don't think anything changes after beating James [Duckworth].

"I'm still taking it one match at a time, but it's great being back playing."

    Stephens 4-6 7-5 6-2 Kalinina

    She's done it.

Defending champion Sloane Stephens digs deep to reach the third round with victory over world number 134 Anhelina Kalinina.

It lasted two hours and 45 minutes, there were 12 breaks of serve, Stephens suffered a blister on her hand and the pair took a 10-minute break because of the heat and humidity.

    We're only on day three.

There is more than just a place in the third round riding on today's match for the Williams sisters, who will set up a clash of the siblings if they progress.

Venus is up first against Italy's Camila Giorgi, with the seven-time Grand Slam champion having knocked out former US Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova in the opening round.

The 38-year-old expects to come up against some hard hitting from Giorgi.

"That's her game style," said Williams. "I definitely have some pace, too. I'm definitely going to go out there with some weapons.

"Obviously the next match, my opponent is not going to roll over. That's really my focus."

Serena, meanwhile, faces Germany's Carina Witthoeft in the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium, which begins at 00:00 BST.

The six-time US Open winner, who beats Magda Linette in the first round, is playing just her seventh tournament since the birth of daughter Olympia last September.

  17. Stephens to serve for the matchpublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Stephens 4-6 7-5 5-2 Kalinina

The American holds and then breaks Kalinina again.

What a relief for the defending champion this will be against a Ukrainian who has put in a heck of a display.

Stephens will now serve for the match.

Uh oh. The headline of the weather forecast on a local New York City television channel says it all.

With the weather again going to be hot, humid and hazy, there will again be no sanctuary for the players on-court today. Like yesterday, temperatures will feel more than 100F (38C)

Like yesterday, the USTA have allowed the male players to implement a extreme heat break after the third set.

There is good news. It won't be as hot over the coming days. The bad news? The humidity is sticking around.
