Harriet Dart's serve is being chewed up and spat out by Sharapova.

Dart isn't a quick server anyway - averaging only 71mph today - and her second serve is particularly vulnerable having won only one of seven points on it.

Sharapova means business, not letting the qualifier settle in. She is getting an awful lot of second serves to look at.

    Sharapova 3-0 Dart*

This is breathless from Maria Sharapova at the moment, quickly racing into a 0-30 lead on Harriet Dart's serve and only a matter of inches saves the Brit from going three break points down.

Good footwork, even better hands from Dart thought to make it 30-30 with a thwack of a down-the-line backhand.

Having been following Maria Sharapova since she was in primary school, Harriet Dart knows all about the power which her "idol" possesses.

At the moment she can't do much about it. The Russian has already spanked in six winners.

James Stevenson: The first grand slam of 2019 is underway! I’m not expecting Harriet Dart to beat Sharapova. That would be asking a lot. Just hope she plays well and can keep her out there a while.

    Sharapova 3-0 Dart*

Cracking crosscourt return from Harriet Dart to pull Maria Sharapova way out wide and the scrambling Russian cannot coax it back on target - that's better.

It only provokes her opponent. Rasping racquet skills from the 30th seed see her rattle to 40-15 and then Sharapova double faults...

    A minor blip. Sharapova holds.

    Right then, Harriet. Whatcha got?

Maria Sharapova hammers a backhand down the line from Dart's second serve and it rattles the 22-year-old's strings before flopping to the blue surface in front of her.

Nice, pulled forehand to wrongfoot Sharapova and get on the board from Dart and a quick scuttle to 30-15.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova screams into an overcooked forehand, and at 30-15 is made to work by Harriet Dart.

The young Brit drags Sharapova into the net and out again, but it's the Russian who takes the point and then the opening service game with a neat backhand.

Katie Boulter marks her overseas slam debut by taking on experienced Russian Ekaterina Makarova on court 12 in the first round in Melbourne.

The 22-year-old made the breakthrough into the top 100 in October having started the season at 199, having won her first grand slam match at Wimbledon last summer.

"I've had my eye on this tournament for a long time," said Boulter, whose current ranking of 99th in the world secured her entry into the Australian Open main draw.

"It was a huge goal for me last year, so to achieve it is great and a big confidence boost for me."

Heather Watson endured a difficult 2018, dropping out of the top 100 over the summer before climbing back in at the end of the season.

She faces 31st seed Petra Martic from Croatia on court 14.

The 26-year-old has been searching for the right balance on and off the court and consistency remains a problem.

This will be Watson's eighth straight appearance in Melbourne, with her best run coming when she reached the third round in 2013.
