Djokovic has too much time at the moment. Nadal is hitting the ball hard, but with so much spin that it just pops up, and it's not hurting Djokovic enough. It works on clay but on hard court it doesn't have the same impact.

    Djokovic 4-1 Nadal*

Another wide forehand from Nadal...but he dishes up a lovely, spinning serve to draw level at 15-15.

Djokovic then reaches the next serve but Nadal moves into the net and slams a volley into the open court. A little rally breaks out and Nadal is stretching as his forehand pops long.

Djokovic gets lucky with a drop off the top of the net but Nadal recovers with an excellent backhand and moves 40-30 up.

A hum of amazement from the Laver crowd as they chatter at the changeover.

Djokovic has cracked nine winners already... And made just one unforced error.

Nic MacLellan‏: Yesterday I wanted both Osaka and Kvitova to win, but today I'm Team Rafa all the way. Would be amazing to see him win a Slam on hard courts again.

Every ball that drops too short, Djokovic is on top of and looking for the opening. It's so dominant.

    Djokovic 4-1 Nadal*

Djokovic moves 30-0 up in no time. That's 10 points from 10 he's won on serve. An ace makes it 11 and he wraps up the game with a stunning backhand.

    This is absolutely ruthless.

How does Djokovic do that? The man is barely human. He was moving across the baseline like he was being controlled by a computer joystick.

Nadal has to find a way to get Djokovic out of position on the return. That lefty-slice serve, stretching him out wide, is much better.

Big celebrations from Nadal at the far end! He's only won a game - but it's a start.

Nadal drops two strong serves and takes the advantage, then smashes a forehand out wide and Djokovic can't reach it.

    He's on the board!

    Djokovic 3-0 Nadal*

Nadal works the point but hits a poor drop volley and Djokovic sends it down the line. He recovers with a testing serve down the T but Djokovic smashes a backhand winner.

Nadal then produces one of his trademark round-the-net forehands and picks up the pace but overcooks his backhand. Break point.

Hmm. Worrying. Nadal's forehand flies high off his racquet and Djokovic quickly storms to 40-0 up.

An ace just rubs salt into the wounds. Three games down and Nadal has won just one point. Ouch!

Very uncharacteristic miss from Rafa, especially with his forehand, but the defensive skills from Novak are so good, it must feel as though the court is shrinking.
