  7. Federer: 'I surprised myself this year'published at 16:53 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

Earlier Rafael Nadal made it into his 12th French Open final after beating long-time rival in three sets - it wasn't an easy three sets, but was still three sets.

Afterwards, Federer paid tribute to the King of Clay:

"There's nobody who play remotely close to him.

"It's just amazing how he plays from deep and bounces back and forth from the baseline.

"But my mind was 'anything can happen'. The difference was a passing shot there and a pick-up shot here.

"It was a great tournament and I really enjoyed it.

Perhaps one of my best ever here.

"I played really well and surprised myself how far I progressed, Next year, like with any other tournament, I don't know.

"I enjoyed the clay-court season this season [after a two-year break from it]."

    And it starts raining again.

Djoko walks off and Thiem has a chat with his coach Nicolas Massu before walking off.

It's both very windy and very rainy.

Saved as Djokovic at full reach pushes the ball over the net which then runs flat.

Thiem responds with a heck of a backhand winner that passes Djoko.

    Second break point.

The pair partake in a 20-shot rally which sees Thiem come out on top. He apologises for his winner - which seems strange, because there didn't seem anything flukey about it.

    30-30.

    30-40.

    Break point!

    Yikes!

The 25-year-old Austrian holds with a Federer-esque one-handed backhand down the line.

The rain has stayed away after that little break earlier.

    Good times.

This time Djoko's slide pays off as he produces a winner which Thiem can only get his racquet to, and not much more.

    15-15.

But Thiem responds with a 106mph forehand - the police are still chasing it.

    30-15.

Thiem is really struggling with his vision. Clawing bits of clay out of his eyes with his fingers.

The Austrian goes long and Djoko holds.

Having said that he produces his second double fault of the game.

Thiem then gets up from his service-return position in order to peep his head above another dust-storm.

The Austrian then wins the point of the match, twice scooping the ball back into Djoko's side of the court before a brilliant sliced shot has his opponent scrambling.

Advantage, but Djoko saves and now has advantage himself.

There are still quite a few empty seats for the semi-final. Hmm..

A recurring theme at the French.

Anyway, Djoko is looking good at 30-15.

Thiem holds his opening service game of the third with an ace down the T - a good one to hold following the recent Djoko storm.

    Djokovic 2-6 6-3 Thiem

Djoko has a taste for it again.

He charges to the net to put away a winner and clinch the set.

We are all level inside Philippe-Chatrier.

    *Djokovic 2-6 5-3 Thiem

Djoko breaks as Thiem's forehand clips the net and sails beyond the baseline.

Like I said earlier, the Serb has a way of easing himself back into a match.

Now he has the chance to serve for the second set.

  19. Postpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    Djokovic 2-6 4-3 Thiem*

We all know Djoko to be up there with the great sliders of the game, however he struggles to get to a shot that lands within his sliding range.

    15-15.

But now 15-40 as a super-whipped forehand is too good for Thiem.

    Two break points.

Djokovic cruises to a love game.

The rain break seems to have steadied him, even if the winds haven't.
