Federer can take confidence from the fact he has overcome Nadal in their past five meetings, though he has only beaten the Spaniard twice in 15 attempts on clay and never at Roland Garros.

A 19-year-old Nadal won the first of those matches at the semi-final stage on the way to claiming his maiden Grand Slam in 2005, while his other four victories have all come in the final.

In fact, it is a decade since Federer got the better of Nadal on clay, beating him in Madrid in 2009 three weeks before lifting his only French Open crown.

It has been eight years since he last met Federer at the tournament, clinching the 2011 final in four sets.

Nadal's backhand goes long and Federer breaks back. It's back on serve on Chatrier.

Nadal hits the ball into the net and Federer has another break point.

Nadal whacks a few powerful forehands, but then hits one a bit too far and it lands long. Deuce.

Federer's backhand is as silky smooth as a Swiss chocolate and he uses it to bring the score to 15-15.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion comes to the net and that works out too. 15-30.

Federer is definitely giving himself the best chance he can as he gets Nadal on the run and slams a forehand to take a 40-15 lead.

The Swiss finishes off in style with an ace.

Rafa is the greatest wind player we've ever had.

The reason Federer doesn't like these windy conditions is because he can't hit the spots with his serves.

Federer's only French Open title came a decade ago and he is making his first appearance at Roland Garros since 2015.

But he's not lost all hope in Paris.

"Like against any player, there is always a chance," said the 37-year-old.

"Otherwise, nobody will be in the stadium to watch because everybody already knows the result in advance."

A lightning-quick serve straight down the middle and Nadal holds to love.

Federer started strong, but the Spaniard is looking increasingly dominant.

You can't fault Federer's play, but Nadal is just something else on clay. He breaks Federer on his first service game.

The increasing winds are becoming so strong it is blowing pine cones off trees near Chatrier.

I know that because one just hit me on the head on my way back to the media centre from Mathieu.

Nadal brings up two break points.

The wind is proving tricky and the Spaniard loses the first after sending a forehand long.

Then smart play by Federer at the net saves the second.

The thing with Rafa is that his record against Federer is stupendous.

Federer will have to have more risk today - more serve and volley. When he has break point opportunities he has to take them.

So more on that King of Clay thing...

Nadal is eyeing a record-extending 12th title at Roland Garros.

He has only lost two of 93 matches since his debut in Paris in 2005 and has beaten Federer in four finals there.

Nadal saves break point, but needs a few more points to close out the game.

That first game took eight minutes. This is going to be some battle.

The rain delays mean a slightly strange schedule at Roland Garros today so we're straight into Federer v Nadal after Konta's defeat.

"He might be sick. Maybe there's incredible wind, rain, 10 rain delays."

Roger Federer might have 20 Grand Slams to his name, but the Swiss knows he faces an almost impossible task in the French Open semi-finals - beating Rafael Nadal.
