An almost-mechanical reveal of the red dirt, a raking of the dry surface and a short sprinkle of the water hose.

We're almost ready after a 50-minute rain delay.

    Now we need the players...

Play will not resume until 3pm local time, it has just been announced.

Some of those fans gathering under the covered area at the back of the lower tier decide to go downstairs.

And yes, that is clear blue sky above that stand...

The problem seems to be the grey clouds drifting in over Chatrier from the south, which is behind the stand where the media seats are.

Ooops, I'm clearly no Tomasz Schafernaker. Out of nowhere, the heavens open as that light sprinkle suddenly becomes a downpour.

The players scamper inside, the covers staff race on to the court like they're the Jamaican 4x100m relay team.

  5. Wind comes to Thiem's rescuepublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 8 June 2019

    *Djokovic 2-6 6-3 5-7 7-5 1-4 Thiem

A recovery return lob from Thiem lands just in but the bounce, aided by the wind, leaves Djoko unable to deal with it.

    Break point.

    But Djoko saves.

    Now it's raining.

The Serb races to the chair and walks off to find shelter, followed by everybody else.

    We leave it at deuce.

    Uh oh.... rain.

A grumble of discontent from the crowd, a rustling of waterproof macs being unfolded and hoisted over heads.

It is very light rain. A Glaswegian or a Manc would barely notice it.

    BTW it's starting to rain.

Dominic Thiem seems to have brought half of his hometown of Lichtenworth with him.

    Alright, a slight exaggeration.

But his box is crammed. Kiki Mladenovic - Thiem's girlfriend and newly-crowned world number one doubles player - is there, of course.

Chins are being stroked during every point, fists are shaking in celebration after every winning point for their man.

The scoreline looks good for Thiem.

Djoko goes to his bag to get a new racquet out of his bag. Maybe it has special powers.

Actually, he had broken a string in that previous rally.

Nevertheless the new racquet wins him a point.

    40-15.

Thiem remains on the wind-friendly side of the court, hence why he is 30-0 on his serve.

Thiem plays a poor drop which Djoko easily reaches but the Serb's tapped forehand is too long.

    Lucky Thiem.

The Austrian then goes long again after a rally concludes with a long forehand.

    Break point.
