The pressure is off Halep having not been able to defend her French Open title. She will have to assert herself more than she has done in the past.

Third seed Karolina Pliskova has got her Wimbledon started on number two court, against Lin Zhu of China.

This is Pliskova's eighth visit to SW19 but she has been past the second round only once - last year, when she reached the fourth round.

So far, so good for her this year - she is a break up and leads 2-0 in the first set.

  8. Halep begins Wimbledon challengepublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Halep v Sasnovich (13:00 BST)

Do you have Simona Halep down as one of the players who could win the women's singles title?

The former world number one, who is now down at number seven, hasn't had the best 2019 so far.

The Romanian reached the quarter-finals of the French which came after a fourth-round exit in Melbourne. And you can add two WTA final defeats.

She plays world number 36 Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus on Court One (which looks different this year. Hint: Look up).

Time to turn it around Simona?

  9. Kontaveit in total controlpublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

All very one-sided on Court 14 so far. Estonia's Anett Kontaveit is making short work of Shelby Rogers... with the 20th seed taking the first seven games in just 25 minutes to lead 6-0 1-0.

Rogers, of the United States, has hit more winners - six to five - but is also well ahead in unforced errors - 11 to three - which is why she is shipping games so badly.

  10. Djokovic bids for number fivepublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Djokovic v Kohlschreiber

It's almost time for the world number one, top seed and reigning champion.

Yes, Novak Djokovic won his fourth Wimbledon crown last year when he beat Kevin Anderson in the final and, having been ranked 21st, became the lowest-placed man to win the title at SW19 since world number 125 Goran Ivanisevic in 2001.

Now Djokovic has teamed up with Ivanisevic, adding the Croatian to his coaching team, and kicks off his campaign against Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber on Centre Court at 13:00 BST.

That was a really big match for Heather Watson.

You can see what it means, it will mean a lot for her tennis year to get that win.

It was a tough start - but it's not how you start it's how you finish.

    McNally 6-7 (3-7) 2-6 Watson

She had to work hard but Heather Watson has seen off the challenge of 17-year-old Caty McNally.

The American had two set points in the first set but could not take either of them before Watson won in a tie-break and then two early breaks of serve left her in control of the second set.

Next up for Watson is either American Shelby Rogers or 20th seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.

    Wawrinka 6-3 6-3 6-2

No problems whatsoever for veteran 22nd seed Stan Wawrinka, who cruises past Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans 6-3 6-3 6-2 in an hour and 27 minutes.

The 34-year-old has reached the quarter-finals here twice before in 2014 and 2015, but he has also lost in the first round on six occasions. Not this year, though.

There have been more than a few signs from McNally on what she could be and what she is about. She is a quality young player - there's no doubt about it.

However, today she's come up against a Briton who has more than once or twice mowed these lawns.
