That's really a double blow for Fernando Verdasco.

He gave the first set away but then he got back into the match by breaking Kyle Edmund but now he's immediately given it away.

Edmund has a chance to run away with it now - he's hitting really well.

    Edmund 6-4 0-1 *Verdasco

Kyle Edmund wallops a mighty forehand cross court, the rotational force taking him clean off his feet, to bring up 15-30.

    What can he do here?

Verdasco's slice draws him in and the Spaniard lands the sucker-punch follow-up down the line to level things up at 30-30.

More industrial-grade hitting. And Verdasco floats long on the defensive.

    Break point.

Kyle Edmund's forehand come to the boil just when he needs it, peppering the baseline and pushing Fernando Verdasco deep.

A glorious squash shot pass, all feel and touch, helped the Briton to break point where his power over-powered the Spaniard.

    Edmund 5-4 *Verdasco

What a get! What a miss!

Kyle Edmund seemed to have the set won as his forehand pushed Fernando Verdasco out to somewhere near row one.

But the Spaniard stretches out a racquet to claw it back.

Still, clear open court for Edmund...but he nets on the half-volley.

Chance gone for good? We are at deuce.

    Edmund 5-4 *Verdasco

Kyle Edmund is not picking up on the Fernando Verdasco serve. He biffs a tame return into the net to allow the Spaniard to skip merrily to 40-15.

    But whomph! There it is!

A 95mph rubber bullet of a forehand down the line wins the next point for the Briton.

And then Verdasco pummels a half volley straight at him, Edmund makes the response into open court and we have deuce.

    Edmund 5-4 Verdasco*

    Boris Becker

Kyle Edmund is serving well today. Especially on his second serve - he's putting down a lot of solid deliveries.

I think the semi-final at Eastbourne last week really helped him.

  16. Edmund holdspublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 3 July 2019

    Edmund 5-4 *Verdasco

    A swish! And a miss!

Fernando Verdasco attempts to impart so much topspin on a return that only thin air is minced through his strings. The ball pitches past him and into the backboards for an ace.

Verdasco lands a pinpoint forehand on the next point to prove that he can.

But Edmund's running volley wraps up the game.

Entering the business end now. No margin for error. No safety net if you fall off the serve tightrope.

    Edmund 4-3 Verdasco*

We shouldn't forget that Fernando Verdasco has beaten Kyle Edmund the last two times they played.

So Edmund needs to be emotionally carried along because tennis-wise Verdasco is probably the favourite.

Ranking-wise Edmund is higher but because of the record you'd bet on Verdasco.
