That is four Grand Slam finals in a row that's Williams has not been able to win, but I don't know how much more she could have done today against this 19-year-old.
Andreescu is the real deal.

Philip West: That’s it. The Serena Williams era is over, without a doubt. Bianca Andreescu is the new superstar of women’s tennis. An astonishing performance, and one of the most incredible Grand Slam title victories I have ever seen.
Capo di Tutti Capi: Come on!!!!!!!! Andrescu is the new champ!!!! Silence the partisan #USOpen, external crowd. She nearly choked but cross the finish line at the end!
Abzzy Rahman: Absolute shocker that. Serena Williams just fell apart there. Congratulations Andreescu!

With the help of a ladder, she climbs into her box to hug her family, friends and coaching team. Mum and dad grab her for one big cuddle. Oh and her DOG is in her box too!
What a moment.

It's nothing personal. The crowd just want Serena Williams to win.

This doesn’t quite capture the madness, so trust me when I say it is like a gladiatorial arena.
People from all sides lean in the direction of Williams after that previous hold, prowling the baseline like a Roman fighter waiting for their opponent to pull themselves up off the dirt.

Well, well, well. We were not expecting this about half an hour ago. It was a damp squib at 6-3 5-1.

I have never seen 14,000 people CLAP a double fault before.
Andreescu 6-3 6-5 Williams*
Andreescu lets off a bit of steam. After a double fault, she goes 30-15 up and screams at herself. That's the first we've heard from her in a while. Then she sends an ace down the T.
Williams fights back for another point but Andreescu holds. She's starting to look a bit more nervous now so that was important for her.

Williams has levelled! Five games all. People are high-fiving in the crowd!

I'm guessing the people climbing to their feet after every point and shaking both fists in the air like an irate cartoon character are usually calm, reasonable people.
This is what sports does to you. This is what Serena does to the New York crowd.

John Poole: If Andreescu loses this, I don't think she'll ever get over it

She actually could win this and that's putting a little worm in Andreescu's apple there.
