Punching the air at regular intervals, and seemingly loving every minute after five months on the sidelines, Murray returned as a winner.

He was at his sharpest in the second set - executing a high backhand volley with a high degree of difficulty, and then hitting two thumping forehand returns to get the decisive break of serve.

Murray also took a tumble, to no ill effect, and there was no sign of the on-court limp we had become so accustomed to - before his surgeon worked her magic.

"I will not forget this match. We played a good match. Thank you everybody for the support.

"I know I'm a little more British this week than usual since I'm playing with Sir Andy Murray.

"It was a lot of fun. The most important thing is that Andy is healthy and back on court."

Andy Murray had to wait for the cheers of the crowd to die down, but when he eventually started his on-court interview he said:

"It was brilliant. I enjoyed it a lot. I was a little bit slow at the beginning but got better as the match went on.

"I'm very fortunate to be back playing tennis again.I love playing on this court, it's a brilliant place to play tennis.

"I felt quite relaxed in the build-up today but I started to feel a bit nervous walking to the court. You want the nerves and the butterflies in the stomach and I had that today."

Murray hits a winning backhand volley and gives the biggest fist pump of the match so far. It was one of those over-the-head-while-spinning-around ones.

Lopez follows it up with an ace. 30-15, two points from victory

The top seeds take a 30-0 lead but Lopez cries "come on!" as their ball lands wide.

Lopez and Murray are given a warning for time violation as they convene for a little meeting on the baseline.

It seems Lopez said, "serve a 129mph ace, Andy" because that's exactly what the former Wimbledon champion does. 30-30.
