A touch of urgency from Djokovic.

He misses a volley on the backhand side, but puts away a forehand that barely skips up off the surface on Thiem's serve. A quick hold.

Change of racquet for Novak Djokovic, but he needs a change of momentum too.

It's almost Novak is waiting for Thiem to make a mistake - but you can't rely on that.

Brilliant from the fifth seed, under pressure too. He skips left to meet a forehand in the air and nails it beyond Novak Djokovic. Deuce.

Not only has there been a momentum shift in the match, there has also been one in the mood.

Initially it felt like we were in Belgrade. But the Serbs have been quietened and now the louder support is coming for the Austrian.

Suppose you can't make Australia without Austria...

    Djokovic 6-4 2-3 Thiem*

Dominic Thiem, with yellow streaks across his t-shirt to match those through his hair, glides forward to lash away a smash, but then draws a backhand wide - missed a few on that side.

Abinash Das: Thiem is competing extremely well but is losing out a bit on the mental edge during key situations which can create a major impact in the match. He has to learn quickly that to beat a player like Djoker in a grand slam final, the margin of error is practically nil.

That will settle the Serb somewhat. He comes through another tricky service game to hold.

Novak Djokovic is getting a little agitated by the excitable Melbourne crowd.

This a man who like to keep the peace and tranquility in his life by watching the sunrise and having a family hugging session before dawn.

He could do with some of that zen now...

    30-15.

Here comes the Djokovic resistance. A couple of tenderising backhands to push Thiem deep, followed by the cutest of drop shots.

Thiem will challenge... and will be delighted he did! That's just out, by the tiniest of fractions.

    The Austrian holds.

Fabulous from Dominic Thiem, the speed and athleticism to put Novak Djokovic away with an overhead winner. 40-0.

    Marion Bartoli

It's fascinating. Djokovic is showing it - he just lost it mentally. There were two double faults in that game.

I think he finds he needs to win the points quickly. Right now he has to regroup mentally.

Djokovic smiles to himself after spraying a forehand wide and handing over a third break point to Thiem.

Not because he's liking this. The seven-time champion's brain has suddenly become scrambled.

The only positive is resisting the temptation to nuke his racquet has saved him a few quid.
