Heather Watson was unable to prolong British interest in the French Open singles after losing her first-round match to France's Fiona Ferro.

Watson, 28, was the final Briton in the draws after five of her compatriots were beaten on the opening two days.

But the world number 58 lost 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to Ferro, who is ranked nine places higher in the world. Watson's defeat means she has not won a match since the professional game returned in early August.

The Guernsey player competed at a decent level against the in-form Ferro, but their contrasting form coming into the Grand Slam event in Paris appeared to prove decisive.

Ferro, 23, has climbed into the world's top 50 for the first time on the back of winning a clay-court title at the Palermo Open last month. That added confidence is what seemed to give her the upper hand in a pivotal first-set tie-break from which Watson could not recover.

The pair continued to be evenly matched in the second set, but again it was Ferro who edged the crucial moments.

By the way, Fiona Ferro, who's just knocked out Heather Watson, will now take on 14th seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.

Croatia's Donna Vekic is another seed in the women's singles to fall. She was the 26th seed but fell to a 6-3 6-4 loss to Irina Bara of Romania.

Tunisia's Ons Jabeur, seeded 30, was another player in trouble but she recovered after losing the first set to triumph 4-6 6-3 6-1 against Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.

Sofia Kenin, the fourth-seeded American, has battled through against Russia's Ludmilla Samsonova, winning 6-4 3-6 6-3.

But it's bad news for another American as 21st seed Jennifer Brady is out, losing a titanic battle played over two hours and 45 minutes as Denmark's Clara Tauson won with a 6-4 3-6 9-7 success.

It was easy for 14th seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan though as she thrashed Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-3.

Novak Djokovic laid down the challenge to his French Open rivals by only dropping five games in a first-round win against Sweden's Mikael Ymer.

The Serb top seed, who is bidding for an 18th Grand Slam and a second French Open, eased to a 6-0 6-2 6-3 victory against the world number 80. After cruising to a 20-minute opening set, Djokovic ruthlessly maintained his level to win in an hour and 38 minutes.

"My ambition is to fight for the title here," he said. "It's just the start of the tournament, I just want to play one match at a time."

Ricardas Berankis will be Djokovic's next opponent in Paris after the Lithuanian world number 66 beat Bolivia's Hugo Dellien 6-1 6-4 6-4 to tee up the opportunity to become the first player to beat the Serb on the court this year.

The world number one's only defeat in 2020 came when he was defaulted from his US Open last-16 match against Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta after hitting a line judge with a ball.

Djokovic is considered one of the clear favourites - alongside Spain's 12-time champion Rafael Nadal and Austria's two-time runner-up Dominic Thiem - to win the men's singles at the delayed clay-court Grand Slam.

Well that was short-lived.

Djokovic immediately breaks back. It looks like victory is inevitable for the top seed.

The Swede takes his opportunity and gets things back on track in the third set.

We had a couple of breaks in a row, one that was nearly a break and now a few more routine games.

A lovely two-handed backhand down the line, seconds after a double fault, sees Ferro take the game. 3-3.
