Medvedev sets about consolidating that break with an ace, but Evans chips away at the Russian's serve to force deuce.
Can he produce an immediate response?
Evans 1-3 Medvedev*
Ah. A double fault costs Dan Evans. The world number two had his number in that game and claims the early break.
*Evans 1-2 Medvedev
Anticipating another dart to the net from Evans, Medvedev fires a lovely passing shot beyond the Briton's outstretched arms and sets up two break points...
*Evans 1-2 Medvedev
A few more spectators swan in just as Evans prepares to serve. The Briton loses the first point, but puts away a confident smash to make amends.
*Evans 1-2 Medvedev
But that's as close as Evans gets to an early breakthrough.
Medvedev closes out the hold with a fine forehand winner.
Evans 1-1 Medvedev*
A solid start from both players on Arthur Ashe. Medvedev rushes forward to send another forehand winner cross-court and out of Evans' reach for 30-0.
That's loose though! Medvedev overhits a forehand and it's 30-30...

Evans 1-1 Medvedev*
Smart play from Evans, who decides to go for the serve and volley on a second serve to catch Medvedev on his heels.
That's a great start. Another volley at the net and it's an opening hold to love for the British number one.
*Evans 0-1 Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev makes light work of his opening service game.
Dan Evans is allowed just the one point, sandwiched between a couple of aces from the Russian.
Evans 0-0 Medvedev*
We're under way!
The roof is closed on Arthur Ashe today due to rain.
The world number two is first to serve.
Evans v Medvedev
A big ask for Dan Evans today, but as you'd expect the British number one is full of belief following his excellent comeback in the third round.
"I've got as good a chance as anyone to do some damage," Evans said on meeting Daniil Medvedev.
"I think my game is in a good place. He's a great, great player, unbelievable competitor, good mover. He's been playing some unbelievable tennis this year.
"But if I go on the court and think I've got no chance and there's no pressure on me - I think in the pressure situations, if they do arise, you're not ready for that. You've got to go in believing you can win."
There was no such drama for Daniil Medvedev in his third round match.
The world number two needed less than two hours to defeat Spanish world number 72 Andujar.
The Russian, who lost in the 2019 US Open final to Rafael Nadal and the Australian Open final earlier this year, won 6-0 6-4 6-3 on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
He's yet to drop a set so far after three matches.
Dan Evans is the first British man in the US Open fourth round since 2016. Johanna Konta did, of course, reach the quarter-finals in 2019.

*Van de Zandschulp 6-3 6-4 5-5 Schwartzman
A place in the US Open quarter finals is tantalisingly close for Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp.
The 25-year-old won the first two sets against Argentine 11th seed Diego Schwartzman and the third set stands at 5-5 on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The Dutchman is currently serving for a 6-5 lead.
He did it, but boy did he do it the hard way.
Dan Evans produced a gritty comeback from two sets down to overcome Australian Alexei Popyrin in a gruelling match last time out.
The Briton somehow found a burst of energy in the final set tie-break to win 4-6 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-1) in four hours and seven minutes, with victory securing his place in the US Open fourth round for the first time.
It is the second time Evans has reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam after his run to the last 16 at the Australian Open in 2017. Can he go one better today?
Evans v Medvedev
Svitolina 6-3 6-3 Halep
A fine performance from Elina Svitolina.
The fifth seed wraps up victory over Simona Halep, who appeared to be struggling with a thigh problem, with a third break of serve in the second set to seal her place in the quarter-finals.
It'll be Angelique Kerber or Leylah Fernandez for the Ukrainian next.
The calendar Grand Slam - and men's record 21st major title - remains on for Novak Djokovic.
The men's world number one did have to come from behind to beat Kei Nishikori, however.
The Serb responded superbly to a loose first set to win 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-3 6-2 and will face American Jenson Brooksby next, after the wildcard beat Russian 21st seed Aslan Karatsev in five sets.
"It took me a little bit of time to adjust to his game," Djokovic admitted after the match.
Svitolina 6-3 5-3 Halep*
A comfortable hold for Elina Svitolina. She leads Simona Halep by a set and 5-3 and is closing in on the last eight.
*Svitolina 6-3 4-3 Halep
Fifth seed Elina Svitolina has broken Simona Halep for a second time in the second set.
The Ukrainian leads 4-3 and is about to serve to move within one game of the US Open quarter-finals on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
