Rafa Nadal: "The beginning of the match was very tough - he was playing bombs all the time and his serve was huge, and in these warm, fast conditions it is always difficult.

"He is young and the speed of his ball is just incredible. He’s fast running and when he hits the ball every time, he is going for the hardest power possible.

"It was a tough match and I was lucky to win the first set – I don’t know how I did it but I was super happy."

Up next for Rafael Nadal is Richard Gasquet, after the Frenchman beat compatriot Hugo Gaston in straight sets.

Rafael Nadal edges ever closer to the second round with a leaping forehand from mid-court. Five match points for the Spaniard.

A thunderous forehand from the Australian, but it rattles the tape. He comes sliding in to meet a backhand volley off the next but punches long. Nadal's tie-break to lose now.

Saved! Nadal miscues the return and we're back to deuce. But Popyrin coaxes a backhand off his own long off the next point and the Spaniard has a chance to break again.

This game is energy-sapping just watching. Popyrin goes slightly long with his backhand and Nadal has a chance to break once more...
