    *Watson 2-6 2-2 Niemeier

Niemeier has great anticipation and comes into the net to meet a Watson shot and nudge it home for 30-0.

Watson shoots long off the forehand but salvages a point when Niemeier fails to pull off a trick shot.

The German holds with a 115mph ace down the middle.

That's always been a bit of an Achilles heel for Heather Watson, it's not a massive serve and her second serve is also very attackable. Her first serve in that game was around 74mph and that is quite slow.

Ouch. After the elation of securing that early break, which brought the buzz right back to Centre Court, a painful double fault and another miss have brought Heather Watson crashing back down to earth.

  4. Niemeier breaks backpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 3 July 2022

    Watson 2-6 2-1 Niemeier*

Niemeier quickly starts to find her shots again and builds up the pressure, racing to 30-0 on Watson's serve before the Brit flips a forehand perfectly to reduce that gap.

Niemeier gets two break points but only needs one as Watson makes her 12th unforced error of the day.

    *Watson 2-6 2-0 Niemeier

After Niemeier crashes a forehand into the net, she follows that up with a soft drop shot effort that falls too short. All of a sudden, Watson looks the more composed player on Centre Court, and a few errors are starting to creep into Niemeier's game.

Watson has three break points. Niemeier takes back control to stave off the first, but Watson breaks on the second. Well, well, well!

That was a really good hold from Heather Watson, under pressure when Jule Neimeier was still coming after her.

    Watson 2-6 1-0 Niemeier*

The first point of the second set sees Hawk Eye make an appearance for the first time today.

Heather Watson challenges a call of out on a baseline shot, and she's right to do so, Hawk Eye showing it was in...just. It's brought back for a second serve.

A topsy-turvy game sees Niemeier earn another break point, but she can't use her chance, putting too much power as she attempted to smash down a Watson lob. Deuce.

This time it's Watson who gets the opportunity to win the game, with a brilliant volley off the forehand. She holds, much to her delight and that of the crowd.

It was pretty much a faultless set for Jule Niemeier - I thought she might be more nervous walking out on this court for the first time with most of the British public getting behind Heather Watson early on - I thought that may have unsettled her, but no it hasn't.

    *Watson 2-6 Niemeier

With the exception of that double fault, Jule Niemeier has made no mistakes in this first set. She's dominated.

Heather Watson, meanwhile, is feeling the pressure and looking a bit frustrated. She slams the ball into the net in anger after missing an easy point at 30-15 down.

Niemeier holds with a very clever shot cross-court.

Successive breaks of serve for Jule Niemeier have dampened the mood somewhat on Centre Court.

There are shouts of encouragement for Heather Watson as she steps back out following the change of ends, but the first set looks to have been moved swiftly out of reach.

  12. Niemeier breaks againpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 3 July 2022

    Watson 2-5 Niemeier*

A couple of slip-ups with Watson's groundstrokes followed by a measured lob from Niemeier brings up another two break points for the 22-year-old.

She's unable to convert the first after much better play from Watson, but gets the second as the Brit puts too much on a forehand.

Niemeier will serve for the first set.

There was already an excited atmosphere on Centre Court following the centenary celebrations, but that wonderful point preceding Niemeier's second hold had the crowd out of their feet long before the action had finished.

It looked as though Watson had caught her opponent out as she produced that lob to the back of the court, but it was the German who ended with her arms raised as she draws the killer blow. Superb.

    *Watson 2-2 Niemeier

A first ace of the day for Jule Niemeier on her first serve of the game, before a Watson backhand fails to clear the net.

The rally on the third point is extraordinary, and they're both left smiling as the crowd shows their appreciation. Niemeier won the point with a forehand just out of Watson's reach, but it could have quite easily gone the Brit's way. Make sure you watch that on the highlights later.

A second successive love hold for Niemeier.
