Cilic is in charge, he is serving exceptionally well. He is willing to come in behind that serve, willing to attack and willing to serve volley.
Ruud has created two break points but not been able to connect.

Now Cilic is in a fantastic position in this opening set and maybe Cilic is starting to believe 'this is my time'. Ruud has to be disappointed with that game. It's on Cilic's terms at the moment and he is getting the crowd on his side.

Conditions are a lot quicker [than earlier on] as the roof is open and both players like to go after their shots. It's a big difference playing with the roof open than closed and they prefer it when the roof is open.
*Ruud 3-3 Cilic
Better from Cilic, stepping into the centre of the court and sending a bruising forehand away to get the advantage.
A big serve out wide wraps up the game.

It's amazing how far players stand back, especially on clay, and you have to expect the serve volley.
Ruud 3-2 Cilic*
Marin Cilic is, of course, a former Wimbledon finalist. He's reached the final of every Slam bar Roland Garros.
He fluffs another easy overhead and then watches a volley get flicked past him by a scampering Casper Ruud for 30-30.
Cilic does finally manage to make an overhead - although the ball was hanging in an air an awfully long time - but Ruud forces his way to deuce.

Marin is playing in the right way, just not executing when he's coming forwards and that's what has let him down so far today. Having played so well here at Roland Garros, he's a bit of a dark horse at Wimbledon.
Ruud 3-2 Cilic*

The former US Open champion is unlucky as he gets Ruud stranded behind the baseline but snatches his forehand into the net tape, before another routine backhand ends up in the net.
Every time Cilic gets his nose in front, he just pops in an error, and Ruud takes advantage with a serve out wide that the Croat can't return.

Cilic managed to play the break points well and that was the key. As he held that game he starts to relax into it and all the pressure is back on to Ruud. These mini-battles are so important, especially in the opening set.
If you get a set up you start to relax into your tennis.
*Ruud 2-2 Cilic

If Cilic can hold it settles him into the match as he's got away with one.
Ruud 2-1 Cilic*
Saved again by Cilic, this time with a ferocious one-two punch.
