Good job British umpire James Keothavong has quick reflexes.

He had to duck sharply when the attempted backhand from Ruud - on the point which sealed the first set - flew towards his chair and drilled the protective roof over his head.

Ever the professional, he didn't flinch in delivering the scoreline.

So impressive from Nadal - the last three points all slow first serves into the backhand, all unforced errors from Ruud - it's all about who plays the big points better.

If you've never been to this corner of Paris, you might not know Roland Garros is in the middle of a sporting enclave.

Over the road from the tennis are two more of the French capital's biggest stadiums - both architectural classics of their time.

The brutalist beauty of the Parc des Princes, home of Paris St-Germain and where the French national football and rugby union teams used to play.

Next door is the Stade Jean-Bouis, a stunning modern stadium with a lace-style exterior made by triangle-shaped beams.

Stade Francais, the French Top 14 rugby team which plays here, may not have won many trophies in recent years but the place they call home must have picked up a few architectural titiles.

Nadal knows his career doesn't have long to run, but he has a chance to make it 22 Grand Slams, which is a compelling prospect - and woe betide anyone who gets in his way.

Lots of royalty on Chatrier today.

As well as the 'King of Clay', there is Hollywood eminence in Michael Douglas, Hugh Grant and Sienna Miller.

Nadal and Ruud are also being watched on by sovereignty from their respective nations - Spain's King Felipe VI is sat next to Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway on the front row.

The pair have a chinwag at the changeover. Hope the former wasn't gloating too much at the scoreline.

Ruud is looking to make every rally as long and physical as he can.

He has to think to himself 'how do I make him a bit tired'.

    Nadal 5-2 Ruud*

Nadal has a little icon of a tennis ball with the number 13 on his shoes, to represent his French Open successes. He's going to need to order some new shoes the way this one's going.

Ruud manages to win a couple of points off the Spaniard's serve from 40-0 down, including a nice cross-court effort, but it's not enough.

Nadal mixes it up, brings Ruud to the net and then produces a lovely passing shot with his next chess move. Ruud now serving to save the set, Nadal one game away from having the first set in the books.
