    Djokovic v Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev's route to the US Open final has included big wins over Andrey Rublev and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Just two of his matches have gone to four sets and the Russian has not faced a five-setter all tournament. But just how fresh will he be feeling after that semi-final match against Alcaraz?

Daniil Medvedev overcame current world number one Carlos Alcaraz in four sets to set up a repeat of the final he won 6-4 6-4 6-4 two years ago in New York.

On that occasion, the Russian's victory denied Djokovic a calendar Grand Slam - where a player wins all four majors in the same year - and he can once again deny his rival a historic achievement here.

"I think the only way I can use [the 2021 final] is thinking that Novak, when he loses, he's never the same after. He's different. It's just a different mentality," Medvedev said.

"That's why he has 23 Grand Slams, many Masters 1000s [titles] and weeks at number one. I have to use it knowing that he's going to be 10 times better than he was that day.

"If I want to still beat him, I have to be 10 times better than I was that day. That's what I'm going to try to do.

"Novak is going to be his best version on Sunday, and I have to be the best-ever version of myself if I want to try to beat him."

It's the morning after the night before for Coco Gauff.

The 19-year-old American fulfilled the destiny for which she had long been earmarked by winning the US Open title and her triumph is understandably the talk of the town.

A soon-to-be iconic photo of Gauff holding aloft the trophy covers the back page of the New York Daily News.

Quite the feat when the whole nation is getting animated about the new NFL season kicking off this weekend.

The buzz about that is shown by the paper's front page banner highlighting their New York Jets coverage.

Barring one near miss in the third round against fellow Serb Laslo Djere, Novak Djokovic's route to the final has been pretty much plain sailing.

He went two sets down in that match but has not dropped a set in his other five en route to the last two, knocking out two Americans along the way.

  6. 'Every final is a shot at history'published at 20:48 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

Novak Djokovic will be out for revenge against Daniil Medvedev today as he goes in search of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

The Serb, 36, is again within reach of Margaret Court's all-time record, two months after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon.

Medvedev denied him adding further to his 23 titles to date with victory over Djokovic in the 2021 US Open final in straight sets.

"I understand every time in a Grand Slam final, it's another shot for history," Djokovic said.

"I'm aware of it, and of course I'm very proud of it, but I don't have much time, nor do I allow myself to reflect on these things or think about the history too much.

"When I did that in the past, like the 2021 final here, I was maybe overwhelmed with the occasion and the opportunity, and I underperformed.

"I don't want this to happen again. I'll try to just focus on what needs to be done and tactically prepare myself for that match."

Over on Louis Armstrong Great Britain's Alfie Hewett has just wrapped up a fourth US Open title against compatriot and doubles partner Gordon Reid.

The 25-year-old successfully defends the title he won last year and the triumph marks an eighth Grand Slam title.

For Reid, it was his first Grand Slam final in four years and his wait for a third major title goes on with the last one coming in 2016.

"It's not easy playing your doubles partner in a Grand Slam final!" said Hewett on court.

"But it's nice to see you back in a final where you belong.

"It's the stuff of dreams to come and play on a stadium court and to be holding the trophy for a fourth time is something I'm really proud of."

Driving rain with drops as big as billiards balls made for a truly honking morning in Manhattan.

The downpour eased about lunchtime and the skies are a little brighter at Flushing Meadows now.

But with much more rain forecast you can bet your bottom dollar the Ashe roof will be closed for the final.

Who does that favour? Both really. Like yesterday’s women’s final, the match will be played in cooler indoor conditions - in which both Djokovic and Medvedev thrive.

There could be a lot of mammoth rallies and I’d expect a long night ahead.
