    Alcaraz v Muller

Centre Court is filling up nicely as Carlos Alcaraz and Alexandre Muller take to the grass.

Hats are on and the sun cream is at the ready. Perfect weather for a bumper round of matches on this fine Friday.

    Gracheva 3-2 Sabalenka*

The speedometer ticks up to 119mph as Aryna Sabalenka finds her service rhythm for an easy hold against Varvara Grachevaa.

Her French opponent is unfazed though and has Sabalenka travelling round the court off her serve with some varied groundstrokes.

It's a lovely cross-court winner too from Gracheva to seal game point.

Carlos Alcaraz will be delighted if he goes on to have as good a career as the other players joining him on a huge promotional poster near court 12 - Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg

Twenty-year-old US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz is aiming to become the third youngest player to win the men's singles title in the Open Era, behind 17-year-old Boris Becker in 1985 and 20-year-old Bjorn Borg in 1976.

Asked if he felt he would be the successor to Novak Djokovic and dominate the game after the Serb retired, world number one Alcaraz highlighted 21-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner and 20-year-old Dane Holger Rune, ranked eighth and sixth in the world respectively, as other options.

"I don't feel I'm the best of my generation," said Alcaraz. "Sinner is there. Rune as well, they are playing a great level.

"It's 1-0 head-to-head against Rune, he's up on me right now and I've had great matches with Jannik. There are a lot of great players in my age there right now - we are going to share great moments."

Alcaraz has had to wait a full three days to play since he was first up on Court One against Jeremy Chardy on Tuesday. The Spaniard was on the practice courts yesterday, training with British number one Cameron Norrie in an hour-long session in an attempt to stay sharp.

The practice courts at Wimbledon are a great place to stand around and observe.

A little earlier, British number one Cameron Norrie sauntered back towards the locker room and passed his opponent Christopher Eubanks, who was chewing the fat with Murray's coach Ivan Lendl.

Behind them, in the warm-up area, Stan Wawrinka was loosening his serving arm with the help of a volleyball.

The three-time major champion will need that firing - and his famed backhand - to stand any chance of shocking seven-time champ Novak Djokovic later.

In the doubles, Briton Lloyd Glasspool and French team-mate Nicolas Mahut have safely progressed to the second round with a straight-set win over Andrey Golubev and Maxime Cressy, winning 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

  6. Who is Alexandre Muller?published at 13:21 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

    Alcaraz v Muller

Most of us know who world number one Carlos Alcaraz is. But here's a look at who the Spaniard faces on Centre Court at around 13:30 BST.

France's word number 84 Alexandre Muller has worked his way into the top 100 for the first time this year and just before Wimbledon, he won his first Challenger 125 title at the Emilia-Romagna Open.

Now he is playing in his very first Wimbledon main draw.

His first match? A tough four-set win over compatriot Arthur Rinderknech on Tuesday.

His second? A Centre Court showdown with the top seed. Not a bad gig on your Wimbledon debut.

  7. Breaks traded on Court Onepublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

    Gracheva 2-1 Sabalenka*

An unusual start here on Court One, with breaks traded.

Aryna Sabalenka's sketchy serve lets her down as two double faults immediately presents a break back to Varvara Gracheva.

That seems to settle Gracheva down as she shows off some handy net skills in her next service game.

Sabalenka pushes her to three deuce but her French opponent stands firm and holds.

    As you were.

  8. Berrettini takes chargepublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

    Berrettini 6-3 3-1 De Minaur

Matteo Berrettini really has taken control of his match against Alex De Minaur on court 18.

Italy's former finalist took the first set 6-3 and he's also added an early break in the second against his Australian opponent, who had shown great form on the grass so far this year.

De Minaur is the 15th seed at the All England Club, but he has a lot of work to do here as we know how useful Berrettini is on this surface.

  10. Alcaraz soaks up the sun at SW19published at 13:15 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

    Alcaraz v Muller

Carlos Alcaraz was hitting the practice courts earlier this morning ahead of his match with Frenchman Alexandre Muller, and the top seed is all smiles as he soaks up the sun.

The crowd were often drowned out in Alcaraz's opening match against Jeremy Chardy as rain thundered down on the roof of Court One.

The 20-year-old said after that match that it would be much better with no roof and the sun shining through, so I'm sure he will be glad to see today's weather forecast.

He'll be in action on Centre Court in around 15 minutes...

    Efficiently done.

Daniil Medvedev quickly gets the job done on his return to court, completing victory over Adrian Mannarino by taking a third set tie-break 7-5.

The third seed will go on to play either American Marcos Giron or Hungary's Marton Fucsovics, who are currently playing on court nine.

Fucsovics leads that one by two sets to one and has just broken serve in the fourth.

"Ready to give everything to the the very last point. See you on Centre Court," he posted on social media this morning.

At the same time Murray was hitting in his secluded corner of Aorangi, his opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas was over on the other side.

The Greek fifth seed looked fresh as a daisy, spending time on the serve which he utilised very well in the opening couple of sets last night.

Dad Apostolos barks out the orders to the other side of the court, where Tsitsipas's brother Petros - also his doubles partner - is tasked with warming him up.

A tie that would not have happened last year.

All Russian and Belarussian players were barred from competing at Wimbledon in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, so Aryna Sabalenka was ineligible.

Her opponent Varvara Gracheva was born in Moscow and only obtained her French passport last month.

Before that though, it's world number two Aryna Sabalenka against Varvara Gracheva.

Sabalenka has an Australian Open title and a semi-final at Roland Garros under her belt already this year.

Untroubled passage into round three is her aim today.

Holger Rune is very much on course to reach the Wimbledon third round for the first time.

The Danish sixth seed has taken the second set against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena in a tie-break on court three, edging that 7-3.
