Novak Djokovic is snaffling everything up from the baseline despite Stan Wawrinka's best attempts to stretch him and eventually Wawrinka sweeps a forehand wide and Djokovic gets the first break of the match.

A couple of good rallies in this game with both finding their range. Stan Wawrinka looks on course for a relatively comfortable hold but a forehand winner from the baseline by Novak Djokovic is then followed up with Wawrinka putting a shot into the net and Djokovic has break point.

Djokovic has become an excellent volleyer over the years. He does the occasional serve and volley, just enough to keep Wawrinka off balance.

Stan Wawrinka has only managed to take two points off Novak Djokovic's serve so far as the defending champion holds pretty comfortably once again.

Djokovic keeps his opponent on his toes in that game, catching Wawrinka out with a good serve and volley.

  5. One British pair through, one out in doublespublished at 20:57 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

Joy for Olivia Nicholls and Jonny O'Mara afer sealing safe passage in the mixed doubles.

The British pair were heavily beaten in the first set by Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Kirsten Flipkins but recovered to win 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-2.

However, it was not the same story for Alicia Barnett and Julian Cash who lost a decisive tie-break to Nikola Mektic and Bernarda Pera and exited 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (7-10).

Not too many of Stan Wawrinka's first serves are finding the target but when they do they are nigh-on unstoppable. A first ace of the match puts him 40-30 up before Novak Djokovic finds the net with a return and we stay on serve.

Just think about what Djokovic has gone through in the last couple of years. Defaulted at the US Open. Thrown out of Australia. Unable to play countless other tournaments.

    It has fuelled him.

When I came to Wimbledon for the practice week, the first people I saw were Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka.

They have got an amazing history in lots of tournaments. Certainly in Grand Slam finals, Stan has come out on top but I'd be surprised if he comes out on top tonight.

It's great they’re out there under the roof.

This is a match at different stages of their career. I still think Djokovic is absolutely at his peak.

Stan has done very well coming back from knee surgeries but there is no doubt Djokovic is the clear favourite for this one.

Perfect response by Novak Djokovic as he holds to love. We're rattling through these games at some pace and Djokovic is looking in the mood to get this done tonight.

Great work by Stan Wawrinka as he battles back from 0-40 to secure a big hold. The crowd appreciates that too, acknowledging the fight back with a big roar.

Novak Djokovic is kicking into gear already as Stan Wawrinka struggles with his first serve. They are giving Djokovic the opportunity to hit winners and he soon finds himself with three break points.

Wawrinka saves the first the one before Djokovic puts a return into the net and it is 30-40.

    *Wawrinka 0-1 Djokovic

Novak Djokovic's first point of the match is met with a huge cheer but there's plenty of support for Stan Wawrinka as he is applauded when he gets ups and running at 30-0 down.

Djokovic, though, is serving with pinpoint accuracy and Wawrinka is unable to get a couple of efforts back over as the defending champion takes the first game.

Twenty-six meetings between these two, with Novak Djokovic winning 20 of those. Will win 21 come tonight? Djokovic gets things up and running.

  14. Murray 'right not to commit'published at 20:40 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

    Murray 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (2-7) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 Tsitsipas

    Tim Henman
Former British number one on BBC TV

Andy has got a wise head on slightly older shoulders now and he is absolutely right not to commit to anything.

I'm sure he will reflect when the dust is settled that this game was such fine margins. There were only two breaks of serve in the match and so few opportunities to break serve.

He played a lot of good tennis - it was just a couple of critical moments that Stefanos Tsitsipas came up with the goods. That's what defines sport at this level.

He will reflect on how much effort he has put in this year. He dropped down levels to play in Challenger events and to win two on grass. That emphasises the hunger and desire.

When you have achieved what he has achieved, to lose in the early rounds is disappointing.

That desire still burns bright and I really hope there is more to come for Andy Murray.

More from Andy Murray, after his defeat earlier today, talking to BBC Sport's Rishi Persad:

On whether he feels he can do better: "I don’t know right now because what it takes is a lot. It doesn’t happen overnight. Improvement takes time and a lot of work and effort. I’m fully aware of that having had such a long career. I know what it takes to improve and you need to want to do that. I have up until now. I’m unbelievably disappointed and upset just now. Maybe I will feel different in a few days but right now it doesn’t feel good."

    BBC Sport

Let's hear more from Andy Murray, talking to BBC Sport's Rishi Persad:

On whether he sees positives form two matches to encourage him to come back to Wimbledon: “I don’t know. I put a lot into this year in preparation for Wimbledon. Right now I don’t know. Losing in the second round, I don’t find that motivating, it’s not why I put all of the work in. I want to be winning and I had a good chance here of having a good run if I could have got through the match today. But I didn’t. It’s very disappointing.”

On whether his relationship with fans at Wimbledon gives him motivation to come back: “That for me is a big factor. Playing in an atmosphere like that is amazing. I have been very lucky to play many matches here with brilliant support and great atmospheres but, ultimately, I want to be performing better. I don’t want to play the first and second round of Slams and then be on my way home and watching it on TV. If I am competing and putting the work in I want to be doing better. Right now, it’s not been paying off.”

  18. 'Sad, upset, disappointed, all of those things' - Murraypublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

    Murray 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (2-7) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 Tsitsipas

    BBC Sport

Andy Murray's hopes of a deep run at this year's Wimbledon were dashed, and he was speaking afterwards to BBC Sport's Rishi Persad:

On how the defeat feels after being in such a good position: “I feel sad just now, upset, disappointed. All those things. I felt I was in a good position, I had good opportunities. I just couldn’t get it over the line.”

On not challenging the call at 4-4 when Murray was 15-30 up: “I knew the situation going into the match last night, we started quite late and I knew if we split sets it was unlikely we were going to be able to finish because of the time. I was aware of that. I didn’t know the line call that was made until I came off that the return was in. It was such an extreme angle and great return I probably would have won that point. You could argue I should have challenged but the call was right in front of the umpire so they’ve got to see that."
