Second seed Carlos Alcaraz put on a strong display for the Rod Laver Arena night session crowd, winning 6-4 6-4 6-0 in convincing fashion over world number 60 Miomir Kecmanovic to reach the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park for the first time.

The Spaniard will face sixth seed Alexander Zverev who came through in five sets over Cameron Norrie. The other quarter-final set up today was Daniil Medvedev vs Hubert Hukacz.

    Two-time finalist Medvedev beat Portugal's Nuno Borges 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-1 to reach his third Australian Open quarter-final.

Polish ninth seed Hurkacz ended French wildcard Arthur Cazaux's fairytale run in straight sets, 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4, to make his first quarter-final in Melbourne.

Britain's Cameron Norrie fell short of the Australian Open quarter-finals as sixth seed Alexander Zverev edged an absorbing five-setter by winning a first-to-10 match tie-break.

    Norrie, seeded 19th, lost 7-5 3-6 6-3 4-6 7-6 (10-3) to Germany's Zverev.

After one of his best performances at a major to beat Casper Ruud in the third round, Norrie played even better against Olympic champion Zverev.

But his mistakes in the deciding tie-break proved costly as Zverev won.

Norrie, who had never previously beaten a top-10 opponent at a Grand Slam event, had been bold and aggressive in the key moments as he twice fought back to level.

However, he was unable to execute as well in the final-set tie-break and looked understandably dejected as he walked back to the locker room.

"At the end of the day it is a Grand Slam and everyone is playing their best here. Cam has been playing amazing tennis and I'm just happy to be through," said a relieved Zverev.

Zverev, who is aiming for his first Grand Slam title, will face Spanish second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

We still have one more women's singles match to come on Rod Laver Arena but in all three round four matches played so far on Monday, seeded players were knocked out by unseeded opponents.

Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska, ranked 93rd in the world, beat two-time champion Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 to make her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

The 23-year-old will play Czech teenager Linda Noskova who advanced to the final eight thanks to a retirement from 19th seed Elina Svitolina, who was visibly upset as she waved goodbye to the Margaret Court Arena crowd.

Italian 26th seed Jasmine Paolini lost 6-4 6-2 to world number 75 Anna Kalinskaya, who had previously never made it past the second round at a Grand Slam

On his injury last year and getting to the quarter-finals for the first time:

"I am feeling better and better every day. Obviously every match I’ve played in Rod Laver, I’ve been feeling more comfortable and it is a pleasure to play in this arena.

    On facing Alexander Zverev next:

"Playing at this level I will have my chances. He has played tough matches as well, tiebreaks in the fifth set. It is going to be tough for him as well.

"At the US Open he was struggling as well before coming to my match and he was 100%.

"I love playing against Sasha – I think we bring a high level of tennis, high intensity. I will try to bring my best tennis and let’s see what happens."

Let's hear from Carlos Alcaraz, who reaches the quarter-finals in Melbourne for the first time:

On his victory and what was working well:

“Well I think everything. I did everything almost perfectly. In 2022 it was really close and high level on both parts. I think today was a high-level match as well. I pushed him to the limit in every point and obviously he has played a lot of matches in five sets. – a lot of tough matches before this one, so he was not 100 percent.

"In every ball I pushed him to the limit and moved him side to side. I took my chances and I think it was a very good match for myself."

Second seed Carlos Alcaraz and world number 60 Miomir Kecmanovic have only played once before but it was a belter at the Miami Masters event in 2022.

Spaniard Alcaraz edged it 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-6 (7-5) in a match full of points which got the crowd screaming and off their feet in excitement. Alcaraz stole the headlines during what was his breakout season but it takes two to make a great match and Serb Kecmanovic impressed by keeping up with Alcaraz's heroics whilst pulling off some of his own.

Kecmanovic will need to pull off a remarkable comeback if he's to recreate that night in Miami.
