  1. Zverev breaks, serving for the first setpublished at 06:01 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

    *Zverev 6-5 Norrie

Not a single break point for either player in the opening 10 games, but Zverev then forces two in the 11th.

Norrie saves the first of them, but a relentless Zverev maintains the pressure and Norrie produces an unforced error on the forehand on the second break point.

Zverev now serving for the set.

"Come on Cam!" shout several fans on Margaret Court Arena.

Sounds as though the Brit has more vocal support than his opponent, judging by the way the crowd tries to encourage him at 0-30 and then 15-40.

Not heard any shouts of 'Nozzdog' - which was often heard during his win over Casper Ruud - yet.

    Zverev 5-5 Norrie*

Two break points for Zverev after a lovely two-handed backhand from where it came from as Norrie advanced.

The first break points of the match, 15-40.

The first bit of trouble for Cameron Norrie, 0-30 down on his serve. If Zverev can force a break here he will then be serving for the opening set.

  5. Solid as a rockpublished at 05:58 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Alexander Zverev is known as one of the strongest servers on the tour, using his 6ft 6in frame to great effect.

As we've touched on, his second serve can be wobbly but his first serve is as solid as a rock.

That is illustrated by the fact only Argentina's Sebastien Baez has a higher first-serve percentage over the past 12 months.

Zverev has helped restrict Norrie's look at his serve today, with that 10th game being the first time has got to 30.

    Zverev 5-5 Norrie*

Zverev mixes it up with some serve-volleying, to maintain his perfect record at the net of five points won from five attempts.

Norrie had a glimmer of hope at 0-15, but Zverev then sees off the threat.

A two-handed backhand finds the net from Zverev, with Norrie at 0-15 and three points from the opening set.

    *Zverev 4-5 Norrie

Cameron Norrie sees a drop shot capitalised on by Zverev, but it is another hold, this time to 30, with an ace, his fourth of the day, seeing off the danger.

Norrie one game from the opening set.

  9. Postpublished at 05:51 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

    Zverev 4-4 Norrie*

It's a match of excellent serving so far. Three aces apiece, 4-4.

One poor service game could be the difference between winning and losing the set.

One of the features of Norrie's win over Casper Ruud in the previous round was the Brit rushing forward to the net.

Already we've seen him do that a few times today.

Zverev, who Norrie practised with in pre-season, wasn't surprised to hear he employed that tactic against Ruud from what he saw at close hand.

Therefore you'd imagine the German will be ready to anticipate whatever tactics Norrie throws at him.

    *Zverev 3-4 Norrie

Norrie's third ace of the match helps him take the seventh game. Some impressive first serve stats for the Briton, who has won 15 of the 17 points behind the first serve so far.

Solid start from Norrie, but can he maintain it throughout the match? It's going to be a tough day for Zverev if he can.

    Zverev 3-3 Norrie*

This one is moving at a fast pace and it's 3-3. Just the first signs of frustration from Norrie though as he lets out a loud groan when sending one far too long.

Six games gone and not a single break point. It's a set where both men will be looking to take any opportunity they get.

A pleasant afternoon at Melbourne. But don't be deceived.

There is a bit of a breeze whipping around the city but not as much inside Margaret Court Arena as I thought there might be.

Neither player seems to have been too affected.

Zverev has thrown in a couple of double faults already - but that's long been a problem for him.

    *Zverev 2-3 Norrie

We've already seen Cameron Norrie move to the net and he tries it again, only to see a lovely two-handed backhand from Zverev fly past him.

But the Norrie first serve is working well and it's a hold to 30.

  15. Postpublished at 05:36 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

    Zverev 2-2 Norrie*

This is already Cameron Norrie's best run at the Australian Open, but not his best at a Grand Slam as he reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2022.

That remains the only time he has moved beyond the last 16 of a Slam.

Norrie gets his first point on the Zverev serve, albeit with a double fault and the German then holds to 15, including an ace for his second of the match already.

    *Zverev 1-2 Norrie

But just as Zverev holds to love, Norrie then does likewise. A lovely angled forehand that brought Zverev dashing around the court but was unable to get there in time the highlight of a speedy game.

  17. Postpublished at 05:30 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

    Zverev 1-1 Norrie*

A rapid-fire hold for Zverev in his first service game of the day. He sends in a hold to love, along with the first ace of the match.

  18. Postpublished at 05:28 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

*Zverev 0-1 Norrie (* denotes next server)

Cameron Norrie is up and running with a hold to 30. It doesn't take long before he goes on the attack as he moves into the net, Zverev tries to lob him but doesn't get enough height on it and Norrie is able to smash himself to the opening game.
