"Carlos! Cabeza, corazon y cojones!" shouts one Alcaraz fan.

That translates to head, heart and, erm, another part of a man's body to indicate bravery.

The phrase has become Alcaraz's mantra during his rise to the top of the game, revealing he says that to himself in important matches.

He will have to show an incredible amount of each characteristic to turn this deficit around.

Zverev moves one game away from victory and what a way to do it, with an absolutely delightful two-handed backhand winner down the line.

Alcaraz needs perfection from now on.

    *Zverev 6-1 6-3 4-2 Alcaraz

Signs of nerves from Zverev as he gets closer to the finish line? A double fault, his first of the match, on what has largely been a hugely impressive serving display, 15-15.

    *Zverev 6-1 6-3 4-2 Alcaraz

A much-needed hold to love for Alcaraz to earn only his sixth game of the match so far.

But he desperately needs to break the Zverev serve and only has two chances to do so or it's match over.

Alexander Zverev's deep run has come a week after a Berlin court announced the 26-year-old faces a trial during this year's French Open over domestic abuse allegations.

    Zverev denies the charges.

In November, the Olympic champion was given a penalty order and fined after being accused of physically abusing his ex-girlfriend.

Zverev has lodged an objection against the order, meaning he remains legally innocent and is not convicted until a final ruling.

He has been asked questions in news conferences about his appointment as a player representative on the ATP Council, which discusses and helps implement changes to the tour.

Zverev has not discussed the issue when asked by reporters, but did say he did not think being a player representative while the case is ongoing was a problem.

Zverev, whose serving continues to be top class, wipes out the danger of deuce and holds for a 4-1 lead.

If Alcaraz is to continue his best run at the Australian Open then it will take a sensational effort from him. Zverev nudges closes to the final four.

Can Alcaraz get the immediate break back? He's taken Zverev to deuce and that is only moments after Alcaraz was left hunched over after sending a forehand halfway up the net.

It needs a very quick change of tactics from Carlos Alcaraz. You can't bulldoze your way to victory at this juncture of the match.

If he's going to strike, he needs to strike in this game.

    Mark Woodforde

I'm just wondering if Carlos Alcaraz should slow things down maybe and keep the points longer. They're playing quick points right now.

    Zverev 6-1 6-3 2-1 Alcaraz*

Alcaraz, trying to save two break points, produces a serve down the middle when Zverev had guessed he would go wide.

Zverev then tries to dig one off the ground but can only hit the tape with the ball dropping his side and Alcaraz survives for now.

    *Zverev 6-1 6-3 1-1 Alcaraz

Zverev closes in on the net to meet a volley for 40-15 but that's as much joy as he's allowed on Alcaraz's opening service game of the third set.

That's certainly the start the Spaniard needed here.

  18. 'Alcaraz walking a fine line'published at 12:32 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    Mark Woodforde

Carlos Alcaraz is walking a fine line right now. If he puts in any loose, unforced errors then it could be too much mentally to come back from.

  19. Postpublished at 12:31 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    Zverev 6-1 6-3 1-0 Alcaraz*

Carlos Alcaraz has never come back from two sets down to win a match at a Slam.

It's a long, long way back from here. What can he bring to the table in this third set to turn things around?

Full of confidence out on Rod Laver Arena, Alexander Zverev records a comfortable hold to 15 to get up and running as he aims to see out this upset in straight sets.
