"The hosts Russia are a genuine medal threat after heavy investment in the women's team in the last few years. This is the strongest Russian side that has ever entered a tournament with over 50 players trying out for the squad.

"They are aided by former NHL star Alexei Yashin who is the team's general manager. The former Ottawa Senator's forward trains with the team every day passing on the knowledge he gained in his 850 games playing in the best team in the world.

"Player to watch - Yekaterina Pashkevich, after 7 years of retirement, the 41-year-old returned to play in the World Championships last year where the team won bronze."

The duo will return on Friday, Valentine's Day, to complete four more runs. The slider with the best aggregate time will win gold.

"I just want to go out there and show the world what I can do," said Yarnold, who won the World Cup skeleton title.

"I just really enjoy competing and that's the only way that I'll keep doing well, to relax, enjoy it and embrace the pressure. It's a real honour that people can think we can do so well."

"Britain's skeleton World Cup champion Lizzy Yarnold says watching Jenny Jones win snowboard slopestyle bronze has spurred her to clinch gold in her first Olympics in Sochi.

"The 25-year-old won four of the eight World Cup events to clinch the title this season but amid growing speculation - she has been fastest in training so far in Russia - she insists the only pressure she feels comes from within.

"Yarnold said: 'I was at slopestyle and I was in awe of Jenny. It brought tears to my eyes. It's what we train very day for.'"

Jenny Jones' parents Helen and Peter said they could both do with a drink after watching their daughter make history in the women's slopestyle, winning bronze.

Peter said: "I need a whisky." Helen added: "I think we both need a drink and a long sleep. It's been great coming out here.

On Jones's success Helen added: "It's absolutely unbelievable, she has never disappointed us. We have always been proud of her but blimey this is the icing on the cake."

Peter added: "We saw her win the first X Games gold medal which was good because we thought we may put the kiss of death on her. Here, we just wanted her to get to the final - that was the target.

"We thought it [the second run] was good, but the wait was absolutely agonising I can't tell you how terrible we felt."
