If ice hockey is your thing, you've not got long to wait as hosts Russia will take on Germany in a Group B round-robin match at 13:00 GMT in the Shayba Arena.

Russia are the highest ranked side in the group and won bronze at last year's World Championships, so may have a chance of landing their first Olympic medal in the sport.

BBC Sport snowboarding and freestyle skiing commentator

"Jenny Jones' decision to put down a standard run [in the second heat] but to do it perfectly - rather than push herself to the extremes and potentially fall - was what won her the medal.

"There were some hearts broken today as some big name snowboarders didn't finish on that podium so it was a phenomenal achievement and she earned it. It wasn't blind luck, she made that happen.

"A couple of years ago her career was starting to come towards an end, she didn't have much left that she needed to achieve and then on July 4th 2012 they announced slopestyle would be put in the Olympics.

"Jenny made the decision to go for that and it has nearly broken her - she has been through so much to get to Sochi."

What was the secret of Jenny Jones' success in the women's snowboard slopestyle? BBC Sport snowboarding commentator Ed Leigh has a pretty good idea...

  6. Speed Skatingpublished at 12:40 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2014

At last, we've got some action as the speed skating at the Adler Arena restarts. It's a super time from Dutchwoman Annouck van der Weijden who gets very close to the course record with a time of four minutes 05.75 seconds to go three seconds clear at the top of the 3,000m timesheets.

  7. Empty seats, security delayspublished at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2014

There were a fair few empty seats at various venues on day one of the Games with organisers admitting that 10% of ticket holders failed to make it on time, or even at all, to their chosen event because of long queues, reports BBC Radio 5 live sports news correspondent Richard Conway.

Sochi 2014 spokeswoman Aleksandra Kosterina said: "I think during the first days, people are really working out with the timing, how long does it actually take time to get to the venues, how long does it take them to cross the security perimeter.

"So it's not an issue of security per se but an issue of the logistics and of people just figuring out what time they have to spend to get to the venue."

We're lacking actual sporting action at the moment as the speed skating has taken a break while they resurface the ice. Pleasingly for the crowd in the Adler Arena, the brass band are back however they organisers have replaced the cheerleaders of yesterday with traditional Russian dancers for a bit of variety.

  10. Snowboarding - Jenny Jonespublished at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2014

Jenny Jones has been carrying out some media commitments - the first of many I suspect - and spoke about her feelings as she waited for her rivals to complete their runs.

"It was so difficult waiting," she said. "I thought I did my best run and landed it as best as I could, thankfully it was enough.

"That was a long waiting game. It feels just ridiculous right now and I can't actually believe it.

" A few said 'is she past it?' but I did what I could and, thankfully, it got me on there.

"When the last girl went and I realised she'd missed the rail, I thought, 'oh my goodness I've made it'."

Sochi 2014 bronze medallist Jenny Jones said after her success that she doesn't like knowing that her parents are watching her compete, but she had an inkling they had made the trip to Russia to see her.

The moment she sees them for the first time is TV gold. Watch again here.

It will also be worth watching our highlights programme, which airs at 1900 GMT on BBC Two, to see action from a non-line camera which was focused solely on Jones' parents - Helen and Peter - during her final run.

"It's great footage," says BBC analyst Matthew Pinsent who brought Jones' parents over to see her after the flower ceremony.

Britain's first Sochi 2014 medallist Jenny Jones' bronze medal is the culmination of 13 years hard work, which has seen her win three X Games slopestyle gold medals.

The 33-year-old did all sorts of jobs to fund her snowboarding career, including inspecting cardboard in a cardboard factory, working in a doughnut shop and teaching fencing to children.

UK Sport say they have invested over £14m of National Lottery and government funding into athletes representing Great Britain at the Sochi Winter Olympics and Paralympics and set them a target of three medals.

Unsurprisingly, the governing body are delighted with snowboarder Jenny Jones' heroics this morning.

UK Sport chief executive Liz Nicholl said: "UK Sport is hugely proud to have supported Jenny Jones as a member of our National Lottery funded World Class Performance Programme.

"It's wonderful to see all the hard work and dedication of Jenny, her coach and support staff, realised when it mattered the most.

"Jenny Jones winning a historic first British Olympic medal on snow, in the new slopestyle snowboarding discipline, will create a huge sense of excitement and momentum within the team."
