After years of campaigning, women were finally able to take part in their first Olympic ski jumping competition. American Sarah Hendrickson and Japan's Sara Takanashi were expected to contend, but the maiden, historic gold was eventually hung around the neck of Germany's Carina Vogt. Her final jump was the last action of the day in Sochi.

Amid breath-baiting tension and heart-stopping drama, White went for it all, but could not nail his ambitious routine. He celebrated like a champion, but the judges were not for fooling. Podladtchikov took a deserved gold and White, the biggest star in snowboarding, did not even win a medal.

Swiss Iouri Podladtchikov burst through it, followed by Japan's Ayumu Hirano and Taku Hiraoka. Could White come from 11th to snatch a medal in the final run of the competition?

It the most theatrical of settings, a brilliant white halfpipe bathed in floodlight, White faltered. On his first run, he fell, dropping his first tricks in an Olympic final. The door was open to the rest.

It was not supposed to be that way. American Shaun White, a two-time Olympic champion and 13-time X Games champ looked likely to dominate again when he swept all before him in qualifying. A run of 95.75 looked to have him in ominous touch. But there was so, so much more to come.

There may have been no British medal glory on day four in Sochi, but there was success in the nation's new favourite sport - curling. The men snatched a dramatic last-end win thanks to German inefficiency, while the women trounced the United States 12-3 in a match that was conceded after only six ends.

British freestyle skier Katie Summerhayes, who finished seventh in the ski slopestyle final, earlier today, tells BBC Sport: "I'm still gutted, but I'm so happy to be here after all the hard work and hard times with my injuries. I've had two ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries, one in 2012 and one in 2013.

"If I had qualified lower then finished low in the final then I would've thought 'well I had fun', but I didn't do very well in the final."

Summerhayes's coach Pat Sharples adds: "Katie was very disappointed and she is not a very good loser, she wants to win all the time. Now we can focus on new training ideas and learn new tricks. We have four years to make sure she is ready for the next Winter Olympics."
