Eve Muirhead's team of curlers will, of course, be hoping to make amends for their opening round robin defeat by Sweden on Monday.

Skip Muirhead was off her game in that 6-4 defeat, with a shot accuracy of 61% whereas Sweden skip Margaretha Sigfridsson was higher at 80%.

"It is always disappointing to lose the first match. It was always going to be a tough one anyway, playing the European champions and world runners-up," said Muirhead.

"They are one of the favourites but the game could have gone either way."

Britain's women curling team will take to the ice at around 1506 GMT this afternoon for their round robin match with USA, but that does not mean it's been all quiet on the curling front. And there's good news for Eve Muirhead and co, too, because defending champions Sweden lost 9-3 to Canada. Switzerland, Russia and South Korea also recorded victories.

It's official. Katie Summerhayes has qualified for the final of the women's ski slopestyle in third place. The Briton was the only competitor to score above 80 in both runs and only Canadian pair Dara Howell and Kim Lamarre qualified ahead of her.

    Katie Summerhayes

Britain's Katie Summerhayes absolutely delighted with her scores in qualification. 84.00 in the heat was impressive and there is still a lot of improvements she can make.

"I was really nervous this morning but I have tried to just think of it as a normal competition," she tells BBC Sport.

"I have another move I'm going to try in the final so we'll see what I can do with that - I'm definitely going for it [a medal]."

For those of you who don't know much about Katie Summerhayes then I can help there. Last season, the 18-year-old won the first World Cup skiing medal by a British female in 19 years when she secured silver. And, apparently, the Sheffield teenager was so star struck when she met Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis she ran off.

"Katie is happy with that run - a smile is never far away from her face. She was rewarded for good rail technicality and although the score doesn't move her up the standings it is better than her first run and moves her closer to the Canadians."

  7. Freestyle Skiingpublished at 07:31 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2014

Katie Summerhayes improved on her first run and was awarded 84.00 points for her second run, which leaves her sitting pretty in third place. The final will start at 0900 GMT.

Thanks to the misjudgement, or ill fortune of others, Katie Summerhayes has qualified for the final of the women's ski slopestyle before her second run. Canadians Dara Howell, Kim Lamarre and Yuki Tsubota, as well as America's Devin Logan, have also gone through. The top 12 will contest the final.

Can Great Britain's Katie Summerhayes add to Team GB's medal collection today?

It's overcast here in the Sochi mountains which GB skiing performance director Paddy Mortimer tells me is good for Summerhayes' prospects.

"It's like being at a snowdome in Manchester, or anywhere in the UK," he tells BBC Sport. "This will help her as it's what she is used to - those skiers who grew up on real snow won't like it as they are used to training in the sun."

Katie Summerhayes remains in third and still has a second run in her locker. The 18-year-old suffered a career-threatening knee injury a few years ago and her build up to Sochi was disrupted by injury, with the Sheffield teenager suffering complications from that original knee problem. Nevertheless, Summerhayes is on course to reach the Olympic final, which is good, isn't it.
