The Summerhayes family are chatting to Clare Balding. Dad Richard told me it had been a nerve-wracking day but they were proud of their daughter.

"I know she was initially disappointed but she always beats herself up," he said. "We're happy she landed a good run in the final and put a score on the board."

How long ago does Katie Summerhayes' final appearance seem? All the way back this morning was the 18-year-old from Yorkshire's start after qualifying third. Disaster in the first run, though. A crash.

"It has been a fitting occasion after all the work that has gone on over so many years into getting this event on here.

"Thousands of women watching this around the world will be inspired to follow in their footsteps. Surely, this will be a permanent fixture in the future of the Winter Olympics. What a night to remember here in the mountains above Sochi. It's a privilege to have been here watching."

History is made by Germany's Carina Vogt. She becomes the first women's ski jumping Olympic champion, pipping Austria's Daniela Iraschko-Stolz with the very last jump. Italy's Coline Mattel takes bronze and Japan's heavily fancied Sara Takanashi misses out in fourth.

There's no time to blink between jumpers flying down to fly distances of 90m at speeds of 90km/h. Austria's Daniela Iraschko-Stolz leads with only three left to go.

Competitors jump further than the length of a football pitch at speeds of 60mph, so power, balance and an unflinching resolve are vital.

It's not just about distance - points are also awarded for style.

Each competitor has two jumps which count towards the final standings.

Shaun White on BBC Radio 5 live: "It's tough. I really wanted to win tonight but it wasn't my night and I just couldn't land what I needed.

"I'm going to go and see my family and try to do whatever people do in this situation

"There was a bit of expectation and pressure but I do that to myself anyway, I just need to go away and think about what happened."

What is it about these snow-based events taking place under floodlights that makes them so much more of a spectacle? Floodlights or not, ski jumping is fascinating enough. Basically, slide miles down a massive slope on skis, leap off the edge and hang in the air for as long as possible, combining style and distance. Madness.

We're perhaps halfway through the second and final round of this women's ski-jumping competition. Slovenia's Katja Pzun leads the way, but there's plenty to come.

Did you know anything about snowboarding before? Have you just discovered a new favourite sport? Shaun White risked it all and got nothing. It was a silver-bronze combo for Japan in the shape of 15-year-old (15!) Ayumu Hirano and Taku Hiraoka. Magnanimous, White was quick to congratulate Podladtchikov, who has been in his shadow for so long.

Shaun White is beaten. The biggest star snowboarding has ever seen doesn't only miss out on gold, but on a medal of any colour. Switzerland's Iouri Podladtchikov is the Olympic champion. Incredible, unbelievable, emotional. If you didn't love snowboarding before, how can you not now?

Has he done enough? Shaun White is claiming gold, but has impressed the judges? The height was there, but there were mistakes. Did he sit down? Bum seemed to touch snow and although the final trick was magic, did his hand graze the snow on landing? He celebrates nevertheless - trying to con the judges?
