The judges award James Woods 78.40. His first run of 86.60 is good enough for fifth. The competition carries on though and two finalists remain. Can Norway's Andreas Haatveit poop the American party?

A deep intake of breath from James Woods as he attempts to find his zen... No problem on the rail section. Will he attempt the triple cork? Nope. He stays on his feet throughout, though, and is applauded by his fellow competitors but he reacts like a man who knows he has not done enough to finish on the podium.

Gus Kenworthy performing feats you'd normally only see in a circus. The American can't help but smile broadly as he waits for the judges to cast their scores. He's waiting... waiting... waiting... thump-a-de-dump goes his beating heart... and he is awarded 93.60 which sees him jump to second. It's an American top three at the moment.

Faceplant! Russell Henshaw soars high but falls back down to earth with a thud. It matters not one jot for the Aussie fans, however, as they carry on waving their cuddly kangaroos. The Australian is awarded 28.80. One to go before we see James Woods who is guaranteed at least a fifth place finish.

GB freestyle skier Murray Buchan tells BBC Sport he thinks James Woods will try a triple cork (one of the hardest tricks in the world) in his final slopestyle run.

"He's had trouble with it in training but he's going to need something like that to push up into the podium places," he says.

"I think he has that potential. If he lands his top three jumps he is in with a real chance."

Back to the acrobatic, loose-limbed world of ski slopestyle and Bobby Brown has improved on his first run, which is his prerogative, earning a 78.40 score on his final effort. But Henrik Harlaut shows that two can play at that game by also bettering his first effort, though his score of 84.40 is currently only good enough for fifth.

Elise Christie just raced a perfect quarter-final. She had two tough opponents in China's Fan Kexin - the favourite for 500m gold today - and Canada's Jessica Hewitt, but did exactly what she needed to go: get to the first corner among the top two. Not as easy as it sounds but that gives you a huge advantage in what is the quickest, shortest race in the sport.

Charlotte Gilmartin, by contrast, got a horrible start in her quarter-final and has gone out. Christie's semi-final will be at 11:10 GMT.

I bring you good news and bad news. On the up side, Elise Christie has progressed to the semi-finals by finishing second in her race in a time of 43.402 seconds, but Charlotte Gilmartin (44.279) will not be joining her as she finished fourth in her heat.

"Wooooow!" James Woods screams after landing the final kicker (jump). It was an impressive run.

"Everything was clean and grabbed perfectly," says GB team-mate Katie Summerhayes. "He did that run to the best of his ability and I'm speechless."

Norway's Andreas Haatveit pushes James Woods into bronze position with a fine score of 89.90 on his first run, but the Briton then drops outside of the medals because of Joss Christensen's phenomenal 95.80 score. As it stands, Christensen is first, Nicholas Goepper (92.40) is second and Andreas Haatveit (89.60) third, while Woods (86.60) is fourth.

    Chemmy Alcott

Alcott said: "It's a tremendous event to watch and I'm loving these Olympics. Normally, I wouldn't get to see many other events because I'm so focused on mine, but seeing as this is my last Games, I want to experience as much as I can."
