Skeleton o'clock. Scenes of nervous anticipation for the British contingent at the Sanki Sliding Centre. Can Lizzy Yarnold cement her growing reputation and continue her dominance in the sport by bagging Olympic gold?

The World Cup champion has been quickest in four of the five training runs she has taken, which adds to the expectation. But this being sliding we can only guess at the shenanigans going on with the others. Are they sliding to full potential, have they used their best set-ups and what will happen when they unveil the yet-to-be-seen race-day technology, such as new aerodynamic helmets and clothing?

World champion Lizzy Yarnold and world gold medallist Shelley Rudman begin their bid for skeleton gold today. Hurtling down a track at 90mph on 40kg of high-tech machinery which looks like a tea tray is what Britons do best, of course, and the skeleton provides arguably Britain's best chance of an Olympic gold.

Hot. Cool. Yours. Blue skies, sunshine and the sound of footsteps on slushy Sochi snow. It's just another day in the balmy Russian Riviera. The mercury is expected to hit a pleasant 18C in Sochi today, but will Britain's medal hopes melt quicker than the thawing ice? It's a pivotal day for Team GB. It's not a day for soft underbellies. It's time to stay cool even though things are hotting up.
