Great Britain short track coach Nicky Gooch says: "The referee said Elise didn't cross the line. Where the finish line crosses the track, she crossed inside that line. The judge ruled she was off track and that means officially she hasn't finished the race.

"The top three qualified, she'd done nothing wrong. She tried to win the race because there is a benefit to that and the referee has called it off track.

"I've seen it called before but it doesn't happen normally and I was really shocked. I've looked at the video and we're talking centimetres here. To the letter of the law it's probably right but she's clearly qualified through that race but the rules say you can't be inside the line."

Great Britain short track speed skating performance director Stuart Horsepool: "We are talking about the smallest margin ever. There is nothing we can do. She won the race, we are absolutely devastated. She was trying to win the race, she was lunging for the line. She was making sure she was safe and she went what we are talking millimetres. These things happen in sport and there is no accounting for it.

"Luck doesn't even come into it. We have to pick ourselves up and come back on Tuesday and hopefully we can have good luck instead of all this horrendous back luck."

Elise Christie, speaking on BBC Two before news of her finish-line infringement was released, says: "I was heading out to watch my team-mate race, then I saw I had got a penalty. I had no physical contact with anyone, so I have no idea what I was penalised for.

"I was playing safe after the 500m final, by trying not to be near anyone. I am gobsmacked - I expected the decision the other day, but not now. I have found it hard, but it is not always about medals. I have to keep pushing through."

Al: If Elise Christie went the wrong side of one of the black markers, fine. But if she simply went over an invisible line between two markers, not fine. That is like someone skiing a slalom course going way over the blue marker guide lines but still going the right way round the gate being penalised.

Chris in York: Even if the penalty was a bit harsh why did Christie feel the need to duck so far inside to try and win? A safe second would have see her through. Silly, needless risk.

"The irony of this is, Elise Christie put on a sprint at the end to try to catch Arianna Fontana (the better your finish in the heats, the better your draw for the semis) and caught her at the line. That caused a photo finish.

"Without the photo finish, would the officials have even noticed Christie had crossed too far inside the line? In other words, if Christie hadn't made that sprint at the end, would she have sailed home comfortably in second and been fine?"
