"Canada's Marielle Thompson underlined her form as the leading ski cross racer this season with a dominant victory in the Olympic final.

"The 21-year-old led almost from start to finish to hold off team-mate Kelsey Serwa as the pair stretched clear of the other two skiers. French veteran Ophelie David, 37, took a shock fall at the back to leave Sweden's Anna Holmlund to coast home uncontested for bronze. Intermittent fog and drizzle added to the unpredictability of this engrossing sport, which as usual threw up thrills and spills aplenty. But there were worrying leg injuries requiring blood wagons off the mountain for Germany's Anna Woerner and Canadian Stephanie Joffroy in earlier rounds."
