Red card! Sorry wrong sport. Poor old Freek Van der Wart of the Netherlands is taken out by a two-footed challenge from Russia's Vladimir Grigorev. That means China's Wu Dajing and Charle Counoyer of Canada are through to the semi-finals. Eley is next up.

"Elise needs to control the race from the front. She seems very relaxed."

Thanks Stephan. I've got my skates sharpened and I'm ready to go. BBC TV are showing Jon Eley backstage looking as nervous as a schoolkid about to find out his GCSE results. He will race in the fourth quarter-final at the Iceberg Skating Palace.

Jon Eley, the GB flagbearer at his third Olympics, goes in the men's 500m quarter-finals. He is ranked 24th in the world and will race alongside Viktor Ahn, the Korean-turned-Russian Olympic champion.

Ahn is the world number one and Canada's Olivier Jean, in the same race, is world number five. It's a tough ask for Eley, who races just before Elise Christie.

There's been a late shuffle for Elise Christie, who has been moved to quarter-final one from than quarter-final four. Off at 16:44 GMT, she will no longer line up against Jorien Ter Mors and faces only three, rather than four opponents. For now, though, our eyes will be on Jon Eley.

Short track is one of the most exciting sports on the Winter Olympic programme, with wipeouts and crashes commonplace.

Skaters race in heats of either four or six around a tight oval track, with the fastest two or three qualifying for the next round.

Overtaking is allowed but there are strict rules on impeding opponents. Races are held over 500m, 1000m and 1500m, and there is also a men's and women's relay.

Here's Britain's Emma Carrick-Anderson, a four-time Olympian, on the different fitness requirements of downhillers v slalom skiers.

"The base training is the same but slalom skiers can't get too big as they have to be a lot more agile. Downhillers will lift more weights, but even they are slighter than they used to be. That's partly an evolution in ski design but also the physical coaches understanding the need to be lighter on the skis, so training programmes have changed.

"In the downhill you can be in a tuck for a minute and half at up to 70mph. That's a lot of force that builds up in the muscles. You may not be breathing quite as hard but your legs will be screaming.

"Slalom has a different burn. Slalom is like a 400m sprint. It's like jumping over a bench as many times as you can in a minute and a half. You are breathing like crazy and the lactic after 50secs is just killing. That is why ski racers are some of best all-around athletes."

Great Britain silver medallist Michael Goodfellow: "It seems really weird saying that we are silver medallists. The fact that for three of us this is our first Olympics, to come away with a silver medal is amazing."

  11. Failed doping testspublished at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

Sochi 2014 had been largely free of drug scandal - until today. Both Italian bobsleigh brakeman William Frullani and an unnamed German biathlete have tested positive for banned substances.

Police officer Frullani, a former international decathlete, will be replaced in Saturday's four-man event by Samuele Romanini. The 34-year-old tested positive for dimethylpentylamine, found in dietary supplements, and failed a second test.

The German biathlete is still awaiting the results of a B sample.

"Elise Christie is currently ranked sixth in the world in the 1000m. Quarter-final opponents Park and Ter Mors are fourth and eighth respectively.

"All of the top five above Christie remain in the competition at the quarter-final stage, including Italy's Arianna Fontana (third, another of Christie's collision-mates in the 500m) and world number one Shim Suk-hee of South Korea."

BBC One is reminding us of the heartbreak suffered by Elise Christie during these Games. First she missed out on a silver medal in the 500m because she was penalised, then was thrown out of the 1500m because she was adjudged to have not crossed the finish line. What a story it would be if she could win a medal in the 1,000m.

It's dark and it's cold but the floodlights are on full beam, the sound system is at full throttle, the crowd are wrapped up and ready to cheer something and the second run of the women's slalom is imminent.

American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin leads by 0.49 secs from Germany's double Sochi medallist Maria Hoefl-Riesch with two-time gold medal winner Tina Maze third. And after her first run, Shiffrin let us into how she is so quick.

"Most of my plan was to try to move my feet faster than anyone else. I guess I moved them about five-tenths faster," said Shiffrin, 18.

"I felt like I skied like myself. I didn't really plan anything spectacular, I just wanted to be quick."

There are three short track medals to be given out this evening - Elise Christie in the women's 1000m, GB team-mate Jon Eley in the men's 500m before the carnage of the men's 5,000m relay. Also, there are prizes up for grabs in women's slalom skiing.

On top of that, there's the little matter of the men's ice hockey semi-final between Canada and the United States. A big night.
