Ukraine win their first gold of the 2014 Winter Olympics with victory in the biathlon relay.

The team consisting of twins Vita and Valj Semerenko, Juliya Dzhyma and Olena Pidhrushna missed five targets but avoided penalty loops to finish in one hour 10.25 minutes.

Defending champions Russia were 26.4 seconds behind to take silver, while Norway collected bronze.

Christie has a tricky 1000m quarter-final at about 16:56 GMT. Park Seung-hi, the very South Korean she crashed into in the 500m final is back alongside her for that race. As is Dutch skater Jorien Ter Mors, one of the best in the field, who has pulled off the impressive double of skating long track and short track at these Games.

"In Russia, ice skates you. That's how Elise Christie will have felt up till now - two disqualifications, an onslaught of online abuse (primarily from South Koreans angry that she took out their gold-medal favourite in the 500m final) and today, the weight of expectation.

"Christie is the world bronze medallist over 1,000m, led the world for much of the past two years over the distance, and looked in superlative nick in her heats on Tuesday. Can she hold her head together after two weeks of torment and deliver?"

Feeling glum? Dejected? Don't be. Firstly, it's Friday afternoon. So close to the weekend. Secondly, Great Britain could win another medal today. Elise Christie straps her speed skates on in about an hour.

"I've learnt a lot. We came here as world champions so there was a lot of pressure.

"When your dreams are shattered, losing in the semi-finals, it is tough. But, we bounced back and I've got to thank our coaches Dave and Rhona. Athletes have to learn to lose before they can win."

Great Britain skip David Murdoch on BBC One: "We just never got off to a good start. We were struggling after three, and when you go 5-1 down to a team of that calibre it's extremely difficult to come back.

"I'm disappointed now but a silver medal is scarily cool. I think I'll appreciate it in about 10 minutes."

The British team are still able to bounce on to the podium, skip David Murdoch sporting a smile wider than a curling stone. It might hurt for a while, but very few can say they have won an Olympic silver. Be proud.

There's a flower ceremony taking place in the Ice Cube ahead of tomorrow's medal ceremony. Great Britain have got their tracksuits on and are standing behind the second-highest part of the podium.

"Nobody move a bristle. If you thought you had just witnessed Britain's last hope of another gold evaporate, you are wrong. Elise Christie is warming up for a tilt at short track glory in an hour's time."

Speed skating you say, Eve? A record-equalling Winter Olympics for Great Britain couldn't get better, could it?

"When you go into a major tournament all you want is that Olympic medal, but when you get to the final all you want is the gold. It will take a few days to sink in, but they have a silver medal.

"It's been a successful Olympics for Team GB and hopefully we can add to that in the speed skating."

  13. Curlingpublished at 15:47 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

It's a fair old contrast to the women's result, no? It feels odd that a bronze medal was cheered 24 hours ago, yet this silver feels like a funeral. Overall, though, it's been quite a Games for both curling teams, who were set a target of winning at least one medal.

"They've had good run up to the final and unfortunately they were second best today. It's still a silver medal, a fantastic achievement.

"I know it's going to be a tough few hours for them with the media, but to get to the position they have done, with three of them new to the Olympics, is amazing.

"During the week they've had a bit of a rollercoaster. I wouldn't say they were an embarrassment, they've done well. The Canadians were just really pumped."

I know, it feels hard to celebrate. It wasn't really the final we were hoping for. When they reflect, Dave Murdoch's men will probably admit they weren't at their best. Canada, on the other hand, were unstoppable.

Well, what an anti-climax that was for GB but they've still won a silver medal! Dave Murdoch's family are already undoing the knots on the bunting as they fold away their flags. Pop music is blaring out as we await the flower ceremony. Both the men's and women's medals ceremonies will be held tomorrow."

  17. Great Britain's most successful Games since 1924published at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

And, lest we forget, that silver won by the curlers is a fourth medal won by Great Britain at these Games. Not for 90 years has a British team returned home with four bits of metal in their bags.

"Let's not forget, this is not the finish we wanted, but they would have taken a silver medal before the competition. It's disappointing at the minute and they were up against it from the start and we weren't at the races. We've won a silver and a bronze and raised the profile of our sport and it's onwards and upwards."

  19. Silver Medalpublished at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

But, in the disappointment of defeat, it's easy to forget that Great Britain are the Olympic silver medallists. There was a time that a Winter Olympic medal of any colour would be enough to earn a place in the House of Lords. Bronzes for the women curlers and Jenny Jones were celebrated, and so should this silver. Dave Murdoch's men were unfancied, and it was a helluva an effort to reach the final.

The hand to throat gesture amongst the Great Britain players calls the final to a close. Canada are the men's Winter Olympic curling champions. What disappointment for the British team, they simply weren't in it from the first end.
