"The first five ends of this match have been ends Britain would want to forget. It's not over yet but goodness me, it couldn't really be much worse for them. Canada have jumped out into a big lead and after the break it could get worse as Canada have the hammer."

Dave Murdoch is up to the task - just. Curling left to right as we look, past those front two Canadian stones, barely having the legs to sneak close enough to the centre. One point picked up, but Britain head to the break four points behind.

One stone apiece remains. Dave Murdoch has sent his first too far. "They could give us three," is the chat amongst the Canadians as skip Brad Jacobs prepares his final stone. Two red at the front of the house, one at the front of the blue ring, which circles the button. Here comes Jacobs, right to left, placing a guard stone well in front of the scoring area. Big shot coming up for Dave Murdoch.

Canada have two stones at the front of the house - the sitting room if you will - and one in the back-left corner, which I suppose is a bedroom. In a bungalow. Britain have the hammer, but it looks unlikely that a decent dent can be put in this Canadian lead.

Dressed in black, Canada look like the henchmen of a movie bad guy. So far, they are clinical. There's the odd smile, but the Buff Boys are focussed on the job in hand. Little noise inside the Ice Cube, overhead lights shimmering off the ice as the granite slides down. Midway through the fifth end, the house is quiet, like the end of a party.

GB's bronze medallist curler Eve Muirhead on BBC Radio 5 Live: "If I was a betting lady I would say there is no hope but I really hope there is. It's very unlikely, but I guess you could say they have nothing to lose."

GB's bronze medallist curler Anna Sloan: "They are really going to have to go all out. They are 6-1 down to such a strong Canadian team."

"One red," says the umpire. Dave Murdoch leans on the top of his broom, absolutely gutted. We have one end to go before a midway interval. Britain retain the hammer for this fifth end, but is it already over?

"I'm not sure what else can go wrong here... I know about trying to talk positive, but you cannot play like this. Britain are just handing it to Canada on a plate."

Can anything else go wrong? Dave Murdoch is looking to move the only Canadian stone in the house in the hope that GB can pick up two points. Dead weight, right to left. Yellow on red collision. It doesn't look good. We need the measurer, a short of shoe rack-style destroyer of British dreams.

  12. Curlingpublished at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

Canadian error? Forget about it. Even Dave Murdoch is making mistakes now. Yellow stone simply has too much juice, flying through the back of the house. Britain now have a job on their hands to ensure Canada don't steal a stone.

Now then, a sign of improvement? Greg Drummond rolls a second yellow stone into the target area, GB have one on each side. Ryan Fry removes one, then GB repeat the dose. Cat and mouse, looking for a Canadian error.

Are you still with me? Keeping the faith? Britain have already come back from 5-1 down to beat Denmark in this tournament. Fourth end four stones old, Dave Murdoch standing at the back of the house with a furrowed brow. GB have the hammer, can they get back in it?

"This, I'm afraid, in the early stages could not be going any worse for Britain. Not only have they not been able to apply any pressure on Canada, but they've also given them straightforward shots for points.

"We've kept asking Dave Murdoch to make the big shots and he's been trying to do that a rescue his team, but now Britain find themselves in a dire position. Something dramatic needs to happen already for Britain to have any chance."

Yep, easy as you like, Canada roll a third stone in to the house. Imagine the butler opening the door, allowing you full fridge privileges and the remote control to put whatever you want on the telly. Britain are making too many errors, and Dave Murdoch can't keep bailing them out. Is it all over already?
