"Canada's success has not all been about their big players, it has been about their depth in quality. Every single player has been accountable and performed well. There is not one player who hasn't looked outstanding today."

"Another unassisted goal by the Canadians by Chris Kunitz - his first of the tournament and there is not much you can do to stop a shot like that and the feeling here is that Canada could put on a clinic now. To shut out teams it is so impressive that Sweden can't open up the door on them. It is so important for all of the Canadian team to have played well in this, the biggest game."

Surely that clinches another gold medal for Canada! Chris Kunitz skates through the Sweden defence before unleashing a thunderbolt which whizzes past the Swedish goalkeeper. The Canadian bench erupts in celebration, only coach Mike Babcock remains calm. Come on Mike, you must be giddier than a kid on Christmas Day.

Canada might be within sight of the gold medal, but their male and female hockey players have already done their country proud with victories over arch rivals the USA - and social media was abuzz, external with the two nations teasing each other before and after the matches. Among the many elements of national pride that were on the line was, apparently, the fate of teenage pop star Justin Bieber, as captured on twitter by Command Sign., external

Sweden's frustrations boil over as there is a bit of biff between the two sets of players. It has been remarkably calm throughout this gold-medal match, usually there are more dust-ups than a WWE Royal Rumble. Little under 15 minutes for Canada to win gold.

But it is the Canadians who start the brightest as they look to kill off their opponents. Defenseman Drew Doughty, who has already scored four goals in the tournament, slaps a shot against the frame of the Sweden goal.

Back to the action at the Bolshoy Ice Dome. Canada restart the game knowing it is theirs to chuck away. Sweden need to score early against a side who have only conceded three goals throughout the whole tournament so far. Big task.

Right, with the last 20 minutes of action at Sochi 2014 just around the corner, now would be an opportune time to let you know what the plan is for the rest of the final day.

The closing ceremony begins at 16:00 GMT and I'm sure we can expect the usual colour, noise and general celebration of the past 16 days. I daren't give any more details away about that, otherwise a car full of suited men wearing sunglasses might turn up at BBC Sport HQ and whisk me away. But what I can tell you is that we will providing plenty of memories from the Games to let you reminisce and have your say. More on that after this final gold-medal match...

BBC Sport in the Bolshoy Ice Dome

"If you watched any curling over the past few days, you'll know how Sweden feel: you're up against a confident Canadian team who aren't doing much wrong, but you can't stop these little mistakes and they're costing you.

"Sweden lacked creativity and were second to the puck for much of that second period. And that Crosby goal was a sublime breakaway. It took a special finish to beat Henrik Lundqvist."

"I don't Sweden have it in their locker to come back from this 2-0 deficit. The second goal was a play made by one of the stars of the show and when his moment came, Sidney Crosby took it with both hands."

  19. Ice Hockeypublished at 13:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2014

Nope, the Swedes survive as the second period draws to a close. But they might well be thankful the Canadians aren't further in front. Canada are 20 minutes away from becoming the first nation to retain the Olympic title since NHL players were allowed to compete in the Games in 1998.

Canada have the chance to kill the Swedes off as the frustrated Scandinavians concede another power play. Can the Canadians give themselves breathing space in the final moments of the second period?
