"The atmosphere has been amazing at the Iceberg Skating Palace and there has been Russian success with the team gold, the pairs and Adeline Sotnikova in the ladies singles.

"But for me it was Yulia Lipnitskaya in the team event.

"She skated to the theme tune from Schindler's List and was wearing the red dress and I couldn't believe she was only 15, it was unbelievable what she created and it left me with a lasting impression."

Great Britain's skeleton gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold on the prospect of carrying the Union Jack flag at the Sochi closing ceremony: "I'm getting a little bit nervous but it is such an honour. It has been the best few weeks of my life. I can't wait to get out there and fly the flag for Team GB.

"I've made a lot of friends in the team and I didn't really expect that beforehand. We have all come from so many different backgrounds and different cultures within sport, but we are similar in that we are all striving to do our best and represent our country. We are one group of people and proud to represent each other. That will show tonight."

Almost time now for the closing ceremony, where Lizzy Yarnold will be once again flying the flag for Britain. Yarnold did not even know what skeleton was when she was selected to try the winter sport at a talent identification day. Six years later she became the Olympic champion as she dominated her event from start to finish to deliver Great Britain's first gold of the Games and only their tenth in history.

It is an extraordinary story and one that Yarnold hopes will provide an inspiration to the next generation of budding sport stars.

Out here in Russia it has been one of the best Games we will go to. Thank you for all the support - maybe you can be a member of Team GB in the future."

Little over 850 miles north of Sochi, there have been violent scenes in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev where 88 people have died in clashes between anti-government protestors and police over the past week.

Ukrainian alpine skier Bogdana Matsotska withdrew from the Olympics in protest at her nation's president Viktor Yanukovych and his government.

Ukraine team officials and some athletes held a minute's silence in memory of the victims. Pole vault great Sergey Bubka, also the head of Ukraine's Olympic committee, called for peace and said he wanted to "bring Olympic Truce" to his country.

"For me it was being with the parents of Jenny Jones and Lizzy Yarnold when they won their Olympic medals and seeing the reaction of their nearest and dearest.

"With Jones, we snuck her parents into the mix-zone for her post-competition interview and it was amazing to be able to unite them all for that special moment.

"I was actually sat with Yarnold's parents during her final run. Her dad was so confident, but Lizzy's mum was incredibly nervous and playing down the occasion. Then when she won they both erupted and there was a lot of emotion."

But, among all the sporting success and warm human interest stories, for some the Games have been memorable for the wrong reasons.

Short track speed skater Elise Christie arrived as one of Great Britain's leading medal hopes, but returned home empty-handed after a soap-opera Olympics.

The 23-year-old was disqualified in all three of her events - the 500m, 1,000m and 1,500m. In the aftermath of her 500m final, where she was penalised for colliding with South Korea's Park Seung-hi, the Scot received online abuse from Korean fans and closed her Facebook and Twitter accounts.

"US v Russia ice hockey was without doubt my highlight. The atmosphere and build-up to the game was incredible during the week. We spoke to Russia star Alex Ovechkin and the US coach Dan Bylsma and they told me just how big a moment it was for them and their hockey careers. Many of the players said it was the game they had been waiting for all their careers.

"The noise inside the Bolshoy was fantastic and it went all the way to a shoot-out with USA winning 3-2. It's one of the best sporting events I've been to and that includes a Rugby Union World Cup Final, Ryder Cups and FA Cup finals - but it's still not as good as Joe Calzaghe beating Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas!"

"When Sarah Hendrickson donned starting bib number one for the first round of women's ski jumping in Sochi, she installed herself in history.

"The US teenager is the world champion. She should have been the favourite here, but ligament damage robbed her of the chance to be competitive (she eventually finished 21st).

"That injury did not, however, take away her chance to compete. After more than a decade of tireless campaigning, led by American athletes, Hendrickson - well knowing the meaning of the moment - became the first woman to jump at the Olympics. A milestone, and one of the last remaining gender barriers at the Winter Games removed."

"My favourite moment of the Games actually came before they had officially started with the slopestyle qualification. It's a sport I've followed for a decade by covering the British Freeski and Snowboard Championships and I knew it would be an instant hit with television viewers at the Winter Olympics. And to see such a strong British team competing - and Jenny Jones winning a first medal on snow - was brilliant.

"Russia have delivered a fantastic Games and Great Britain have also put in a tremendous performance with their record-equalling four medal haul and so many top 10 finishes. In reality, we could have been on the podium on a few more occasions, which is mind-blowing considering our Winter Olympic heritage. The British public embraced the athletes and in return I'm sure they've inspired many children to try some of these sports."
