"In terms of the power of an occasion, the Ukraine women's biathlon relay gold was really special and the crowd responded to that. The most amazing sporting comeback was Sweden's Charlotte Kalla in the 4 x 5km relay, which was phenomenal. She literally did it on the line, to deny Finland and Germany, which was amazing to watch. With so many great finishes I hope a few more people tune into the World Cup races next season as these are speed and endurance athletes at their peak."

A Swedish Olympic official says hockey player Nicklas Backstrom has failed a doping test at the Sochi Games.

Swedish Olympic Committee spokesman Bjorn Folin said Sunday that Backstrom tested positive for a substance found in an allergy medication that he has taken for seven years. Backstrom is the sixth athlete to fail a doping test at the Sochi Games. He was listed on the lineups distributed before Sweden's 3-0 loss to Canada in the gold medal game, but was then scratched. It was not announced at that time why the standout forward didn't play.

    Hazel Irvine
    BBC Sport presenter

"US figure skater Jeremy Abbott was one of the medal favourites ahead of the Games but he fell very heavily at the start of his routine and lay on the ice for about 15 seconds. But he got up and carried on with the rest of the routine and the crowd clapped all the way and gave him a standing ovation at the end. He was choked as this was a Russian crowd cheering on an American skater. His desire to keep going and the crowd's response showed the true Olympic spirit for me.

"From a British perspective, David Murdoch's takeout in the final end in the play-off match against Norway was magnificent. He could have played safe and taken one but he gambled and it paid off, fortune favours the brave, as they say.

"I think his previous Olympic experiences, where he missed out in the play-offs and the bronze medal game, had scarred him and he had a gutsy campaign and fully deserved his medal."

    Clare Balding
    BBC Sport presenter

"Being at the sliding centre for Lizzy's gold with Amy Williams. Their hug afterwards said more than words ever could. Lizzy has been so impressive throughout with her calm confidence an her determination to get more girls into sport.

"I also really enjoyed watching the curling and I'm thrilled for both teams that all that hard work paid off. David Murdoch can hardly speak now he is grinning so much. They are very close with the speed skaters as they've all been staying together and Elise Christie, despite all her woes, came out to the restaurant where we present the highlights to congratulate both teams on their medals. That shows the bond in a GB Team that had never been better prepared not performed better.

"It was a privilege to meet so many of the team and hear them talk about their sport. They are all so approachable, so eloquent and passionate and I love that they want to share their experience with the audience at home. In many ways, that has been the real joy of these Games. "

    Emma Carrick-Anderson
Four-time Winter Olympic skier on BBC TV

"My favourite moments have been the British medals, especially Jenny Jones, as it was on snow. But I have been blown away by the beauty of the mountains here and the friendliness of the people. The United States' Mikaela Shiffrin and Ted Ligety were both outstanding and incredible with the way they dealt with the pressure of expectation. They are true champions, ones who can perform under intense pressure, and remember Shiffrin is only 18. Amazing."

There's no reason why we can't continue this success in skeleton. I think like Lizzy Yarnold was inspired by me was four years ago, how many hundreds, thousands of people are going to be inspired by Lizzy, and the curlers, and the short-track speed skaters, and bobsleigh guys? How many more can we bring on in four years' time?

  18. Medal Ceremonypublished at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2014

Understandably there are some glum-looking Swedish faces receiving their silver medals. In fact, not one player has managed to raise even a wry smile. Obviously that contrasts starkly to the jubilant Canadians, who are the first side to win back-to-back Olympic titles for the first time since 1988. Every single medal draped around a Canadian neck is cheered to the rafters by their fans in Russia.

And that ladies and gentlemen brings an end to the sporting action at Sochi 2014. But we are not done yet....

They are quickly followed by several smiling ladies who are carrying an array of shiny medals. These will be dished out by various dignitaries from the IOC and the International Ice Hockey Federation.
