Would there be a mistake, a disaster to deny Yarnold the gold medal that for so long seemed to be in her grasp?

Still they came, each looking to challenge Yarnold, each one nibbling away at the time Yarnold had to claim gold. In the end, it was American Noelle Pikus-Pace who set the, erm, pace. But, there was still more than 59 seconds for Yarnold to complete her run and slide to glory.

Team GB skeleton bobsledder Shelley Rudman on BBC Two's Today at the Games: "I did everything I could to connect with the track. I am really proud I tried.

"Lizzy Yarnold's success is great for our sport, putting it on the map again."

And so we waited. One by one they went, including Britain's silver-medallist from eight years ago, Shelley Rudman. 16th overall was all she could manage.

A lead after three runs meant Yarnold would be kept waiting for her shot at gold. As leader, she would go last of the 20-strong field in the final run.

Yarnold was the first on the ice at the Sliding Centre, almost melting the hard stuff as she set a track record of 57.91 seconds. It was enough to take a lead of 0.78 seconds into the fourth and final run. It would take something extraordinary to stop her from becoming the 10th British Winter Olympic champion.

Day seven at the Sochi Games was all about Lizzy Yarnold. The 25-year-old from Bath had a 0.44-second lead after two of the four runs yesterday. That was pretty big. There were two more runs today, two more slides between Yarnold and gold.

"Jason Brown has a bright future ahead of him. He still has some junior qualities about him, but that makes him look vulnerable in the longer programme.

"He is a natural performer, you cannot teach that. But he needs to be taught about consistency in his delivery, and how to improve his quad."

The feeling is that isn't enough for a gold for Brown, probably putting him in position for a bronze medal. Results to come...

Ah, now I understand the green. Very Irish feel to the music. Dublin comes to Sochi.

So far, so good. Brown remains on his feet, which is better than most have been managing. Little wobble, but he's still going strong. The pace of the music quickens, the crowd get involved. Fell-good factor building...

Apologies, I gave you some duff information a little earlier. BBC Two is sticking with the figure skating until the conclusion, meaning Today at the Games begins at 19:10. Peter Liebers is only good enough for eighth overall - it's all on Jason Brown. Long dark hair tied in a ponytail, green sequined top that looks like it's been borrowed from a flashy Robin Hood. Here we go...

Liebers is down almost as soon as he's begun. The door is open for Brown, whose routine at the US National Championships last month has had nearly 4m hits on YouTube.

A score of 178.10 for the Canadian, a total of 275.62, good enough for a silver medal. There's tow men to skate - German Peter Liebers and American Jason Brown.

"Patrick Chan looked vulnerable. He did not look confident, he made too many mistakes on the backend."

Chan is not at his best, there's a tumble, but he still has a smile on his face as the routine ends. It seems unlikely that he's done enough for the gold.
