Right now, the cross-country skiers in the men's skiathlon are halfway through, going through the transition from classic to free style. Skis and poles changed.

Later, there are gold medals to be won in biathlon, freestyle skiing and luge.

On the ice, an Olympic champion in speed skating will soon be crowned...

Quite frankly, it's been a day to be indoors.

Those that were, the figure skaters in the team event, treated us to some magic...

  3. Day two highlightspublished at 06:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2018

If you're just waking up, you've missed a couple of things not happening.

Firstly, the men's downhill was postponed because of a high winds and will take place on Thursday. Those same winds caused qualifying in the women's slopestyle to be cancelled completely.

The snow action that did take place, however, was pretty special...

I wonder if they'll ever make bowls an Olympic sport. I'd fancy a go at that.

    Anyway...

The brutal nature of this event has led us to wonder which Olympic sport - summer or winter - would be the easiest to crack if given enough time. Cross-country skiing is somewhere near the bottom of this list. Fencing has been suggested, but I wouldn't fancy getting into a swordfight.

The pace has slowed as we enter the final lap of the classic style. Andrew Musgrave is still in the top 10, perhaps now closer to the leaders. Norway's Martin Johnsrud Sundby is the latest man to assume the lead. There's a leading bunch of about 12 skiers.

You may think that the downslopes are blessed relief. They are in the sense that your arms can rest for a split second. The slight issue is that the skiers are heading face first into a biting wind. The gusts are strong enough to have snow swirling around the skiers' heads. This is a brutal sport.

At times, these guys are practically running, rather than skiing. Dario Cologna has his legs wide apart as he shuffles up another torturous slope. The Swiss and Maurice Manificat from France hit the front.

If you're watching cross-country for the first time, these are very much the rock stars of their country.

It's hard to describe just how big these athletes are in their home country. For the likes of Norway, this here is the main competition. The summer Olympics is almost a little bit of a side-show to this.

Andrew Musgrave had moved up to eighth, but the gap to the leaders has widened. We're more than a quarter of the way through a race that will last for about an hour and 20 minutes. Imagine skiing for that amount of time. There's a 50km event too. Incredible.

To mark your card, when we hit halfway and the time comes for the skiers to change styles, they physically switch to new skis and poles. A bit like in a triathlon when athletes move from swimming to cycling. There's time to be gained in the transition.

  12. Musgrave in the chasing packpublished at 06:34 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2018

Musgrave is rocking a bandana, rather than a hat. He's about 13 seconds behind leader Niskanen, part of a chasing pack that has fallen about six seconds behind the front six.

Robert Smith: Am I only person who's worried that Andrew Musgrave is racing without a hat? It's -16C! He'll catch his death, as my mother would say.

We've just gone past the 6km mark, so that' a fifth of the way through the race. Andrew Musgrave finds himself in ninth place. If you're wondering how a Briton gets himself into cross-country skiing, it comes from a childhood partly spent in Alaska because of his father's job.

Dario Cologna has moved up a place, into second, on the shoulder of Niskanen. For most of the course, these superathletes are in amongst snow-topped trees, only occasionally going past spectators or members of their support staff. The downhill parts are blessed relief. The uphill sections are bicep-burning and quad-crushing.

The white of Finland's Ivo Niskanen is in the lead, with Switzerland's defending champion Dario Cologna tucked into third place. The floodlights are switched on, even though it's not much past 3pm in Pyeongchang. The skiers have just completed the first of eight 3.75km laps.

BBC Sport’s Graham Bell has been speaking to Posy Musgrave, Andrew’s sister, before the cross country 30km skiathlon.

An international skier in her own right, Posy said it was far more nerve wracking watching from the stands than competing.

She also said of Andrew’s chances: “He’s in the top 10 so anything can happen.”

It's not just cold, it's windy too, and that's not going to help the people at the front. It's going to make it much harder for anyone to get away and we will likely see it all bunch up.

You can't hang off the front for 30km, so they're going to need a bigger group if they're going to break.

There was another coming together of bodies there - the skiiers, all 68 of them, are naturally quite bunched up. The most incredible part of this event is there are times when they are required to ski uphill. I mean, imagine pulling yourself uphill on skis, the effort that must take. Then do it for 30km.

If you're going to have that happen to you, you certainly want it to happen now when you have plenty of time to get back into the race.

But already your race plan goes right out of the window - you just have to get back among it.
