In these skiing events, the leader waits in an enclosure to see all his rivals attack his time. How agonising must that be?

Marcel Hirscher moves into gold medal position, taking over from Victor Muffat-Jeandet by more than a second. The new leader has a hug for the man he has replaced.

Is that enough for the elusive first gold medal?

    Men's combined (from 06:00 GMT)

The men's combined combines both downhill and slalom, with times added together to find the overall winner.

The field have already done the downhill element, with slalom to come - that's where the skiiers have to pass through a series of gates on the course. They are much closer together in slalom than giant slalom.

German Thomas Dressen was in first place after the downhill.

Marcel Hirscher, winner of this event in the last two World Championships and a legend of the game, is only down in 12th place...

    He goes next.

    Men's downhill

We're halfway through the slalom part of the combined. Victor Muffat-Jeandet still leads. Marcel Hirscher, who skied back to his hotel after the downhill earlier on, is limbering up by swaying from side to side.

In training, the athletes go down start list according to country.

The three Canadians have all completed their first runs. Next up is the only Romanian man in the skeleton, Dorin Velicu and then Jamaica's Anthony Watson (not the England rugby back).

We've got six men to go before the Brits get sliding.

Remember, we're keeping an eye on Austrian megastar Marcel Hirsher, a serial winner in the World Cup, but who has never taken Olympic gold. He was placed 12th in his unfavoured downhill part of the combined.

Hirscher’s World Championship triumph in Beaver Creek in 2015 saw him go from zero to hero – turning last place in the downhill into first place after the slalom. Magic Marcel has already pulled a rabbit out of the hat by being at these Games in top form given that he suffered a broken ankle in August to leave his hopes seemingly in tatters.

Six months later, he could still complete that turnaround, in more ways than one, by claiming Olympic gold.

    Who goes in what order?

If, like us, you're wondering about the running order in the men's slalom, wonder no more.

Prior to the competition, the top seven-ranked skiers (according to World Cup Start List points for that event) are drawn between start numbers 16-22. Those ranked 8th-15th will be drawn for start numbers 8-15. The skiers ranked 16th-30th are drawn into start numbers 1-7 and 23-30.

If you can explain why this is the case, do let us know.

The second part of the men's combined is under way, with the skiers now into the slalom phase.

This action will be thick and fast, with the athletes taking little more than 45 seconds to negotiate the gates.

Only three men have taken the second run, with Frenchman Victor Muffat-Jeandet leading.
