    Men's halfpipe qualification

If you enjoyed Chloe Kim's brilliance earlier on, then you're in for another treat. It's almost time for qualifying in the men's event, featuring two-time champion Shaun White. I've just seen a video of him suffering a training crash in New Zealand that resulted in him needing 62 stitches in his face.

    Think about that. 62 stitches.

Five months later, he's favourite to take a third gold.

Almost halfway through the downhill and there's no change at the top with Thomas Dressen still leading the way. There are a lot of good downhill skiers still to come in this competition - if the wind picks up again it could all change.

10:30-12:55: As in men's luge, Germany are the nation to beat in the women's field with Natalie Geisenberger the overwhelming favourite to defend her crown.

Geisenberger, who turns 30 in February, has only finished outside the top two twice in 13 World Cup races this season, with team-mate Dajana Eitberger and the USA's Summer Britcher the only athletes likely to offer any kind of a challenge.

Chloe Kim has taken the headlines today, but she did not claim the first medal. That went to the OAR, who won the bronze play-off against Norway to take the first Winters medal in mixed curling.

    Graham Bell
Five-time Olympic skier on BBC TV

When you're growing up as a ski racer you start with the more technical events and then add speed later on. The more you do speed, the more your movements slow down and it becomes harder to do the quick turns in the slalom. Yes, you get bigger, you get stronger, you get more powerful for events like downhill, but then that can slow you down in slalom.

Thomas Dressen of Germany, the first man out of the gates, continues to lead this donwhill part of the men's combined, but the tanks are on his lawn. Norway's Aksel Lund Vindal is less than a tenth of a second behind. Marcel Hirshcer, the slalom specialist, hovers in 10th place.

There are 65 competitors in this combined competition, they will be speeding down that snow-covered mountain until just after 04:00. By that time, qualifying in the men's halfpipe snowboarding, including the peerless Shaun White will have begun.

After that, we can begin to think about British interest on this fourth day...

    Men's combined

On Marcel Hirscher, the Austrian has 55 World Cup victories to his name, second on the all-time list, but has never claimed an Olympic gold. This event is the first of four potential medal shots for the 29-year-old, who is so famous in his homeland that he has to leave the cinema before movies end so that he doesn't get mobbed.

It's looking very fast out on this course, the wind has almost glazed the track. There looks to be a little tailwind at the top which is accelerating everyone nicely.

To give you an idea of what these fellas are doing, they are hurling themselves down a mountain covered pretty much in ice, rather than snow, in speeds touching 75mph. Fearless doesn't do it justice. The white mountain looks pretty in the sunshine, but it is a lethal foe.

That, by the way, was Hirscher's first downhill run of the season. He's a technical specialist preferring slaom and giant slalom. He also missed a lot of pre-season training because of a broken ankle. We've had a delay because of a horrible crash for OAR's Pavel Trikhichev, who absolutely battered one of the gates. It's windy, too. The snow is whirring around into mini blizzards.

Because of that pesky wind, the downhill part of the competition is starting lower down the mountain, favouring a slalom specialist like Hirscher. The second man to go, he gives up 1.32 seconds to Germany's Thomas Dressen, which puts him a strong position for the later, slalom, run.
