This is the start of Mikaela Shiffrin's Olympic campaign, where she's going for four gold medals. She was pushed really hard today by the Norwegian skiier Ragnhild Mowinckel, who claimed Norway's first female alpine skiing medal in 36 years, but Shiffrin looked imperious today.

  3. US star Shiffrin wins 'crazy' giant slalom goldpublished at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2018

America's Mikaela Shiffrin is set to compete in five events in Pyeongchang - and she's off to a winning start, thanks to gold in the giant slalom.

Shiffrin, who is expected to challenge for a record four golds in South Korea, couldn't contain her emotions when she won earlier today.

"I don't know how to explain it. It's crazy. There's so much emotion," she said.

"I have a lot of events to do still so I have to refocus my energy, but to come to the Olympics after some tough races on the World Cup circuit and to charge like that, it's super cool."

This is what we like to see, a happy and relaxed Elise Christie.

The GB short track team were training ahead of Saturday's action and the BBC crew who were there said she was laughing and joking with her team-mates and looked very relaxed.

She was also doubling up as DJ and was in charge of the music during the session.

Her eclectic mix included a bit of One Direction, Eminem and even dancing to Flo Rida’s Shawty got low!

Olympic gold medallist skeleton racer on BBC TV

It's been a phenomenal first day of racing from the GB guys - both have had some incredible times so far. I really don't see why - fingers crossed - Dom Parsons can't win a medal.

Dom is getting on really well with the track, we've never had a medal for the men's skeleton, so I really hope he can get one tomorrow.

After a long wait, Norway's Ragnhild Haga is confirmed as the gold medallist.

Celebrations had already started some 20 minutes ago with all her nearest rivals finished, but we had to wait for all formality of the competitors crossing the line at the Alpensia Cross-Country Centre.

Sweden's Charlotte Kalla takes the silver, over 20 seconds behind Haga.

And it's a joint bronze for veteran Marit Bjoergen from Norway and Finland's Krista Parmakoski, who are another 11 or so seconds down on Haga.

Great Britain's Annika Taylor was one of those out on the course in the closing stages and she eventually finishes 75th out of 90, nearly six minutes behind Haga.

Dom Parsons is so, so close. He's just got to hold it together, he's in a good place. The team's doing really well, and he just has to forget what's happened today, and go again tomorrow. He's got a real chance of a medal.

    Nick Hope
    BBC Sport in Pyeongchang

GB alpine skier Alex Tiley has been reflecting on a difficult day in the women’s giant slalom, where she crashed out on the opening run - which denied her the chance to compete in the second.

“I’m happy to finally compete at the Olympics but I’m really disappointed with the result - it was a rookie error but you’ve got to take risks,” she says.

“I’ll go in to the slalom (on Friday), just try to enjoy the experience and hopefully I’ll be able to do something good.”
