Aside from a personal achievement – of becoming the oldest-ever downhill champion Aksel Lund Svindal has also made Norwegian history by claiming the only Olympic alpine skiing title to elude the nation to date.

However, while the 35-year-old was clearly delighted with the success, he used his post-event press conference to express his disappointment that more spectators had not turned up to watch the event.

"It's a bit strange and sad to be honest because if this race were in Austria, Norway, Switzerland, France, Italy and maybe even the USA there would be a 50,000 sell-out," he says.

"The Olympics should be for everyone, but the Olympics is bigger than alpine skiing and for example perhaps short track speed skating would not be a sell-out in Norway.

"It's sad for us, but I hope more people have the chance to come and watch the Super G tomorrow."
