We are seeing the final of the ladies' giant slalom and earlier on it was the men's downhill.

But gold medallist Aksel Lund Svindal says it is "strange and sad" that there was not a bigger crowd watching, adding that 50,000 people would have been watching if that race had been held in Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Italy or America.

I had to fight a crazy media scrum to get a microphone in for the new Downhill Olympic champion Aksel Lund Svindal.

He is the nation’s first-ever Olympic champion in the event and it’s his first title since claiming gold in Super G at Vancouver 2010.

“For two thirds of he course I skied really well today,” he tells us with a smile.

“We have been close to Downhill gold before but history is one thing and today is about the moment - we care that we had an awesome experience and day for the team.”

“Downhill is for sure the biggest event in the alpine sport because of the speed - it’s like F1 on snow and Norway has won so many medals but never be Downhill gold so that has made it a big deal and I’m so happy for Aksel (Lund Svindal) who won the title today.”
