A bit of insight from Nick Buckland, one half of the British ice dancing duo, about their routines for the Games.

"For our short programme, we are using the same piece of music that Torvill and Dean used in 1994, when they came back to the Olympics," said the 28-year-old.

That'll be 'Let's face the music and dance' by Irving Berlin.

Buckland added: "Chris Dean choreographed it himself. That’s special. We've kind of modernised it a little bit.

"Our free dance is to Muse, so that’s haunting, it’s modern and I think it will really connect with the audience."

Muse and ballroom music? I approve.

It's 20 years since snowboarding made its Winter Olympics debut with parallel giant slalom and halfpipe. Snowboard cross and slopestyle were added in quick succession and now it's the turn of another discipllne - big air.

This is one jump off a 5m ramp and you are scored on the difficulty of the trick, how well you execute it, how high you jump and the quality of the landing.

From a British perspective there were high hopes Katie Ormerod would be in the medal mix after winning World Cup and X Games medals.

But her Olympics ended before the opening ceremony when she broke her wrist and then smashed her heel in two freak training accidents.

She has a long road ahead of her as she recovers from injury but is vowing to compete in the next Winter Olympics - in Beijing in 2022.

I wonder how we could swell these Games. There are only 102 Golds being dished out over the two weeks. What could we get in there for 2022?

  13. Postpublished at 00:19 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2018

You may, however, have noticed the absence of one, crucial thing from the night's proceedings. Something integral to any Olympic Games.

    Gold medals.

The three (yes, only three) to be dished out today, are not up for grabs until after 11:00.

It does make you wonder if these Games could have been trimmed a little. If they worked hard, I bet they could fit them into a long weekend.

And, if that wasn't enough to be happening all at once, Nick Buckland and Penny Coomes will make their bow in the ice dance, taking to the ice in the short program.

Staying on the ice, both GB's men's and women's curlers have crucial fixtures from 05:05 GMT.

At the same time, gravity will once again be defied in the women's halfpipe skiing qualifiers. Rowan Cheshire and Molly Summerhayes are hoping to secure a passage to the medal phase.

Great Britain's Aimee Fuller will look for a place in the Olympic final from 01:00 GMT.
